It’s a Rams-Patriots Super Bowl, and an Officiating Nightmare

After dramatic overtime wins, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are headed to their ninth (!) Super Bowl together, to face off against young Jared Goff and Sean McVay. But the talk today is all about an obvious, game-deciding blown call, and what the NFL must do to address an officiating crisis.

====================================================================

The story this morning should be, would be, Rams coach Sean McVay taking a franchise that had missed the postseason 12 consecutive times to the Super Bowl in just his second year, and going right through the raucous Superdome to do it. The story this morning should be, would be, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s incomparable brilliance in the face of a worthy young challenger at Arrowhead.

But that’s not where we are on this Monday morning.

As has been the case, to a lesser degree, on other Monday mornings this year, you woke up today to more talk about a bad call in a football game. And you should. Because what happened in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday was as bad as it gets, the NFL’s worst nightmare come alive after a year in which the officials were criticized constantly. A terrible officiating failure cost a team a trip to the Super Bowl.

That’s no exaggeration either. There was 1:48 showing when Saints quarterback Drew Brees feathered the ball down the right sideline to Tommylee Lewis, who looked back for it, only to take a crushing head shot from Rams corner Nickell Robey-Coleman, who was on time for the hit like the Giants used to be on time for Tom Coughlin’s meetings: about five minutes early.

Just like Studio Wresting some people think NFL football is real.

I’m happy to say that I didn’t know who was going, didn’t know any drama leading up to it, and still don’t care.

I kinda miss football - but not that much.

It’s frustrating that, with replay reviews, there are still problems with the referees.

Just get rid of replay then, and at least have the games end in under three hours.

Why didn’t the Saints call a time out and a review? I thought every close call after the 2 minute warning got reviewed?

I feel the same way. I miss football, but not the stuff they play today (and try to call football).

Anyway, people should also be talking about the rediculous “roughing the passer” call that Brady got to extend one of their drives. Can the NFL game get any more lame than it is now?

All true, but no crocodile tears here for the Saints have gotten away with years of penalties and playing dirty.

Still, maybe we better check the ref’s account in the Cayman Islands when the bank opens up in the morning (unless they don’t do MLK holidays).

Can you even review an interference call? (Or non-call as in this case). I don’t think you can.

Why didn’t the Saints call a time out and a review?

A non-call of a penalty is not subject to review.

Yup they got robbed and number 55 of the Chiefs gets the honor of robbing them of the win.

Lining up offside and the Chiefs intercepted the pass.

Stooopid.

Many, many people would wholeheartedly agree with you on that.

The KC/Pats game was awesome. As much as I hate the Pats, I’ve got to give them their due - they were just great in the stretch.

No, you can’t. Not currently. This goes back to the days when official’s judgement calls weren’t reviewable. But in this particular case, it was obvious. I don’t know if you let that horse out of the barn, but any way you slice it, the Rams should not be playing next week.

Maybe the NFL can do something about it. We’ll see how crappy the ratings are for this game and how low the ticket prices are. They can’t be happy with this matchup.

For the Rams, that game was like the last election in California, where there was no way in hell a Democrat was going to lose.

Lots of PR and a tickets for their new stadium are at stake. The Rams had to win.

After watching the video several times, I don’t see a way in the world Lewis could have caught the ball. Robey-Coleman had him completely blocked from catching it.

Yep, the Saints got ROBBED.

Yes they got robbed but... They could've put the game away in the first half. And they could have taken more time off the clock. And they could have avoided turning the ball over in OT. And so on... I'm no Rams fan but the Saints did not rise to the occasion.

Don’t think non-calls are reviewable.

Which makes non-calls a dandy way to mess with a game.

It looks like the interference was intentional, in order to stop the receiver from scoring. Robey-Coleman never so much as tried to look for the ball. I bet he was even shocked that he wasn’t called for interference.
