One of the best friends I ever had was named Syracuse. He looked very Italian. Handsome and a great baseball player.
He had one habit which I hated. When he spoke to you or anyone, he got too close. I always wondered if that was from Sicily or just him.

I’ve been to Catania and Taormina. Beautiful places and I fell in love with Spaghetti Carbonara.

I was stationed at NAF Sigonella, just outside Catania...mid-70’s. Been back a few times, took the family once. It’s a rough but very beautiful place. Some towns are almost fairybook-like. The food, the history, the people...just an incredible experience. Anybody that has a chance to go...go.

Gaius Verres was the man who looted the statue of Athena. He was a notoriously corrupt governor of Sicily. He looted whatever he could get his hands on. He was known to use the unrest of the Servile Wars (Spartacus) to extort money from wealthy landowners by claiming their prized slaves were traitors and then demanding bribes for their lives.
Verres was brought to trial in Rome where Cicero gave an opening oration that was so powerful Verres fled Rome without opening a defense.
