Production on the Airbus A380 superjumbo jet will end, and deliveries will stop in 2021 after Airbus (EADSY) renegotiated an order with Emirates, the largest A380 customer.

...The Airbus A380 entered commercial service just 11 years ago and can only be accommodated at about a dozen airports worldwide due to its size.

...Meanwhile, the Boeing 747 looks to live on, even as demand from carriers also shrinks.

Airbus gambled on increased increased air travel demand and a fixed number of landing slots available at large hub airports would mean a demand for larger capacity aircraft to maximize the number of people moved per landing slot.

Boeing gambled on a switch from hub-and-spoke to direct flights between smaller regional airports, and launched the 787 to serve the long haul, lower capacity market.

Apparently Boeing gambled correctly. However, Airbus did find a willing customer in Emirates and other Middle Eastern airlines, which do see spikes in air traffic surrounding the annual Haj.

Eventually all air travel will end, when the Collectivists and muslins rule.

“However, Airbus did find a willing customer in Emirates and other Middle Eastern airlines, which do see spikes in air traffic surrounding the annual Haj. “

There is a Ted Nugent quote here that comes to mind.

Meanwhile, the Boeing 747 looks to live on, even as demand from carriers also shrinks.

The original jumbo jet, which has flown for 50 years, is finding new life as a freighter for UPS (UPS) and FedEx (FDX).

Kind of makes me sad that the 747 is to be relegated to cargo duty.

I have only flown in the 747 once but it struck me as an amazing airplane.

It is also the most comfortable I have ever been when flying. In comparison the 787 today is like flying sitting in a Port-a-Potty.

If Cortez and the Marxists have their way, air travel in the USA will end in 12years. So get in your vacations now. No more vacations with the New Green Deal. No more Sunday drives, no more Taco Tuesdays, no more cheese in the stores. end of all pork rib parties

It will be eating grass like NK, and wearing one set of clothes all year long, because nothing else will exist here

The day they announced these new gigantic planes I knew they were doomed. They said "they'll be lucurious, more roomy and with lounges and bars, blah blah blah". I fly too much to fall for that. To my way of thinking they'd fill them to the brim with tiny seats wedged tightly together. No lounges, no bars. It would take forever to load and unload them so forget about making your connection. The flying experience would be 100% nightmare.

But I don't think that's what killed them. No airports wanted to rebuild themselves to accommodate them. Good.

Sad. I have flown the 380 a number of times and it’s a quiet comfortable plane.

I have been fortunate enough to fly in row 1 as well as upstairs on British Airways 747s. Amazing experiences.

The 747 is one of the all time great airliners.

But the piano bar didn't last very long...

The 747 was indeed a revolutionary and amazing airplane. The pilots that flew it claimed that despite its size it was one of the best handling passenger jets ever made.

The Airline business model has changed for the better however. People are rejecting the Hub and spoke cattle drive in favor of direct flights.

It is an amazing plane, a Marvel really. The Concorde was as well. In both cases however, Boeing realized that the designs were commercially non-viable. Boeing isn’t perfect by any means, but at least two cases they outsmarted Airbus in a major way.

I have only flown in the 747 once but it struck me as an amazing airplane. It is also the most comfortable I have ever been when flying.

I flew in one to/from Tokyo and to Australia (but sadly not return flight). Both long flights out of LAX.

Business class up in the upper deck was incredible. Hardly any people so the bathroom always free, lots of room because it was too narrow for the middle row of seats but wider than the remaining pair of window seats on each side needed so I had my own storage bin right next to my seat where I could fit my whole laptop bag. And there was a contingent of flight attendants up there for a small group of passengers so service was fantastic. Hands down the best flying experience I've ever had.

Well, with the possible exception of that one flight to Amsterdam when the flight attendant school graduating class had their first flight and it was me and three other fellows and 20 some flight attendants in biz class. Service was not as good as you'd think with that many flight attendants but it was really a gift from the airline for them so I can forgive that. It was still pretty darned good! And they probably still tell the story about the time they got to fly to Amsterdam with me!

I, too, have been fortunate enough to fly on a 747 a couple of times. A nice ride.

First and only time I flew on a 747 was back in 73. Round trip to Europe with the family.

It’s a white elephant. Too large for many airports to accommodate. They will sell a bunch of them - or resell - to carriers taking muzzies to Saudi Arabia for their pilgrimage. That’s about it.

Flew to Hawaii on a stretch DC-8. Flew home on a 747. The contrast was stunning. The difference was like a school bus compared to an RV.

Never been on one - Good riddance A380 - Too many people I don’t know or care to know, in too small of an area, for too long of a time, dependent on technology probably written in part by some geek while he was also gaming, getting fretos and picking his nose....although I have nothing against most of that...except the small area is 43,000 feet above the ground and I probably don’t like most of the people!
