“Pretty sure we saw Podrick’s swan song...”

Now that you mention it, he did get a lot of quality time with both of his mentors.

Brienne also got a lot of quality time with Jamie, and the big lifetime achievement award. That could wrap up her arc.

I have also sold all my Greyworm stock, right after he made plans to live happily ever after with his girlfriend.

Old Theon chose to put himself right between the Night King and Bran, so he might be paying off his debts to society there.

Jon probably has to lose a friend too, so maybe the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, or the Warden of the Vale - or crowd favorite little Lady Mormont.

“Sam is in the crypt.”

Perfect place to use the horn, to wake the Kings of Winter.

“Hard to see how Clegane Bowl happens at this point”

If there is no Clegane Bowl, then the Clegane formerly known as the Hound, can go at any time.

Now that Jon knows she is his aunt I doubt that will be happening.

She is commanding one of the flanks and Jaime is serving under her. Jaime will get it before she does.

Sansa has taken the knee because Jon has.

Brienne would make quite a formidable white walker

“Jaime will get it before she (Brienne) does.”

One might sacrifice themself for the other, to wrap up their romance arc. But maybe they will just count the knighting ceremony as enough of Jaime’s validation/acceptance, and get right on with stacking up the dead bodies of beloved characters.

I don’t see the logic of leaving the protection of the walls, and forming up in the open for the Night King’s dragon to mow them down. It might help if they have a lot of characters that need killing though, and not that many more episodes to kill them all.

Many of the actors on the show have commented that the ending of the series will be “bittersweet”.

Well, I’ve gazed long and hard into my crystal coffee mug, and I’ve come up with what I think is the bittersweet ending they are talking about.

Nothing here is a spoiler, just my overactive imagination, my best guess if you will. So here we go…

The battle starts and quickly becomes clear that our intrepid warriors don’t stand a chance against the army of the dead. As the White Walkers and the undead battle their way closer and closer to the gates of Winterfell, Jon and Dani realize that if they have any hope of winning they must take to the skies on their dragons.

They do so, burning a swath through the ranks of the undead and the white walkers, in their search of the Night King. After a fearful battle, both in the skies and on the ground, the Night King is finally destroyed by dragon fire. Once the Night King is destroyed, all the other White Walkers and their walking dead are destroyed as well, ending the battle.

But victory comes at a great cost. Jon is grievously wounded, and Rhaegal is killed in battle. Bran, having warged into the ice dragon Viserion in an attempt to aid Jon and Dani in their fight, and still being in control when Viserion is killed, once more finds himself in a coma.

A count is taken of the fallen. Of note: Ser Brienne of Tarth, Podrick Paine, Gray Worm, Beric Dondarrion, Tormund Giantsbane, Ser Davos Seaworth, Jorah Mormont, Leanne Mormont, Sandor Clegane, Dolorous Edd and Theon Greyjoy.

In the days following the Battle of Winterfell, while Jon is still at deaths door, a raven arrives from Bronn, informing the Lannister brothers of Cersei’s plan to have them both killed. Both Tyrion and Jamie take their leave of Winterfell and head south. Sam, Gilly and baby Sam head south to Sam’s ancestral home, Horn Hill.

Dani legitimizes Gendry as a true born son of Robert Baratheon. Gendry and Aria marry and as a wedding gift, Dani informs then that when she takes the Iron Throne, the Tyrell’s home of High Garden is theirs.

Dani, after seeing that Jon is being tended to in what remains of Winterfell, flies off on Drogon, intending to bring an end to Cersei, once and for all. After torching the Iron Fleet in Blackwater Bay and killing all onboard (including Euron), she sets her sights on the Red Keep, only to find the doors and gates wide open. Cersei has fled Kings Landing and is making her way to Casterly Rock.

On the way Cersei crosses paths with Tyrion and Jamie. Not knowing that Bronn has double crossed her, she tries to woo her way back into her brother’s good graces, only to have both “little brothers” “wrap their hands around her neck and choke the life from her”, thus fulfilling the Valonqar prophecy.

Skip ahead about seven months. Spring has come once again to Westeros. We find out that Jon has died from his wounds received in the Battle of Winterfell. Sansa is now Queen in the North (a promise that Dani made before she left), Bran has recovered and is now Sansa’s Hand as well as the Three Eyed Raven. Yara is Queen of the Iron Islands and Tyrion has returned to Kings Landing and is the Hand of the Queen. Jamie has become Lord of Casterly Rock. Sam and Gilly are formally married and become Lord and Lady of Horn Hill.

In the final scene we find Queen Daenerys of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals, the First Men and of Westeros, and Protector of the Realm, etc.etc has just given birth to a son. When asked by the attending Maester if she has a name, Dani replies, “Yes. I made a promise to his father that if it is a boy, his name will be Eddard Targaryen”.

They say that no plan survives first contact with the enemy.

It will be a lot easier to project outcomes after this battle. It seems bound to be huge, and there are so many unknowns and possible wildcards.

I am guessing that there will be heavy casualties on both sides. The humans have lots of dragonglass, and that is a big change from what the whitewalkers have seen so far. They also know that if you kill a whitewalker, all his wights die as well. We have never seen more than a dozen or so whitewalkers at once so far, so that seems more manageable. Even if all of Craster’s sons are whitewalkers with this army, that would still be less than 100.

We will probably see some familiar characters killed, and raised back up as wights, so people will probably have to kill their former friends.

I believe that Bran explained in the last episode that the Night King wants the Long Night to return. It seemed to mean that we would lose what makes us human, our emotions, our memories; and, darkness.

The Night King and his dead army can live in that environment --- humans really can't.

. She was forced to marry what’shisname by Littlefinger.

"whatshisname" is Ramsey Bolton; and, he basically raped her on their wedding night. The scene was a difficult one to watch. Theon Greyjoy was forced to watch by Ramsey.

I don't believe that Lady Sansa will ever marry again after that experience with Ramsey.

I have heard other folks speculate that the Army of the Dead might need to win this battle in Winterfell, to keep things building toward a big battle in episode 5 somewhere else.

My daughter reminded me of Danerys' vision which was very early in the series. One of the visions was of the throne room where there was a hole in the ceiling and it was snowing inside the room. No one was sitting on the Iron Throne.

That’s a pretty weak motivation IMHO.... Not saying its not all we are getting, but that’s almost a throw away... “They are doing it because they are evil”...that’s all...

Given this has been 80 episodes by the time it is all through, I would expect some more back story on the Night King and his motivations.

We will see if we get anything...

“if you kill a whitewalker, all his wights die as well. We have never seen more than a dozen or so whitewalkers at once so far, so that seems more manageable.”

If you can get to them. So far as we know, other than wild cards like the Horn of Winter and whatnot, that have been almost forgotten in the story, all the dragon glass in the world may not be enough... Lets face it you get killed, then you raise and are fighting for the enemy...

And the most powerful single beasts on the field, are the dragons, of which the Night King has one, and killed it easily, in flight, with a single spear throw.

Obviously SOME will survive the battle, no matter how the battle turns out... but I would expect a twist of some sort if you expect them to win.. My guess is it will be a twist of some sort that simply allows some of them to survive.... let alone win... We shall see.

The story seems weak if the Humans win, their first confrontation with the Night King.. especially when grossly outnumbered... The rest of the 7 realms likely won’t even believe it even happened, if they are stopped at Winterfell, it would just be legend, as the majority of the continent will have never seen anything.

I could be wrong, but I would expect the final battle for survival of humanity, to be later... not here.

See 178, this isn’t the final battle to save Humanity... (I mean the author could make it that way) but it doesn’t make sense if it is, most of humanity would never believe the things even existed, if they are defeated in their first real confrontation with Humans in 1000 years, in the far north...

I would expect the final battle to be later, and closer to the heart of the continent, not some northern outpost, most of Humanity will never know or see.
