More than 500 people were injured over Labor Day weekend by stingrays in Southern California beaches.
The spike in injuries came as hundreds of beach-goers tried to make the most of the sun as summer draws to a close, rather than there being a surge in stingrays locally.
Stingrays are a common find in shallow waters of south-facing beaches, such as Bolsa Chica State Beach and Huntington State Beach, because of the suitable conditions for breeding, and safety from predators, Superintendent of California State Parks, Kevin Pearsall, said.

I thought Gavin Nobrain signed an executive order banning stingrays from California beaches.
You shuffle your feet in the water and let the rays know you are coming. If you stomp like a clod hopper you will land on a ray and get spiked. It is very much like dealing with snakes — you are on their turf and surprising them may end painfully for you.
I saw him on Jay Leno’s Garage with his Corvette sometime back. That puppy is worth some big bucks.

Sharks prey on stingrays. Fewer sharks, more stingrays. I read an article one year about scallop populations down because stingray populations were up. Stingrays eat scallops and there weren’t enough sharks that year to keep the stingray population down.
It worked for me for 20+ years. I've been stuck once.
