If you download a free book from Gutenberg, “A Short History Of Russia”, by Mary Platt Parmele, you will get an excellent education about the beginnings of Russia. It was written just before the Tsar was overthrown, so it doesn’t cover that, but it really gives you a picture of the Russian mindset, which doesn’t seem to have changed much, from its earliest days, until now.
