Flushing toilets may spread bacteria in hospitals

Bioaerosols produced by toilet flushing may help spread bacteria like Clostridioides difficile in hospitals, according to a pilot study conducted in the rooms of patients with C. difficile infection.

“C. difficile can encapsulate itself into spores that are highly compact and resistant to penetration,” Geneva M. Wilson PhD, MPH, a researcher at the University of Iowa College of Public Health, told Healio. “These spores allow C. difficile to persist in the environment for extended periods of time, meaning they can survive in a toilet bowl and are small enough to be projected from the toilet bowl via [a] plume that results from flushing.”

"to be a toilet smuggler"

As I recall, the opening scene of the TV show Twin Peaks was of a gang catching rivals smuggling toilets along the back roads from Canada and killed them in the woods.

Do not know how the dancing dwarf played into it.

This isn’t new.

“Dirty hands? Think twice about using that public restroom soap”

https://www.cleveland.com/business/2013/09/dirty_hands_think_twice_about_using_that_public_restroom_soap.html

“But how do bulk soap dispensers end up so contaminated in the first place?

Sometimes it’s accidental, when airborne particles land in an open soap container.”

I suppose bringing the outhouse indoors wasn’t a good idea after all.

You’re not supposed to drink the water.

most hospitals are decades old...they probably still have the old more robust toilets.....

folks, germs are everywhere....everywhere..... yet the human race has managed to grow into the billions despite all these germs.....

I wish Trump would bring back the old kind.

He addressed that at a recent rally and how these water saving devices such as dishwashers defeat their purposoe when you have to run them 7 times to get the job done.

There is no “may” about it.

How far is your toothbrush and sink from the toilet? Flush it with the lid up and imagine where all that bacteria is going....

Done right the toilet would be alone in its own room.

FWIW, I spent a few days in our local hospital during August a few years ago and they had drain flies. I wonder what kind of nasty stuff the little buggers are spreading around.

It was disgusting to post and hope it wasn’t offensive. I had never heard of the dangerous potentially fatal CDiff, until I was diagnosed. Forty percent of all cases become resistant and can kill. I learned and read all i could while I recuperated. CDiff can remain on surfaces for weeks. Yes, I am a little OCD with public bathrooms. I carry a small bottle of bleach which is the only thing that kills this bug. A few more tips:

Try to never use a public restroom (I have less than a dozen times in 6 years)
As I said, if there is a foul odor, try not to breath, do not touch anything and leave immediately.
Never use the first ten tissues off the roll. Or carry a small tissue supply with you. (Lol)
Do not take an antibiotic unless absolutely necessary.
When you flush, move away as quickly as possible.
Obviously NEVER sit on the toilet seat.
Wash hands in extremely hot water with soap for at least 30 secs. Then never touch the door handle.
Bleach is the only thing that kills CDiff. Hand sanitizers DO NOT.

Oh and if you are visiting a hospital or doctors office, NEVER use those restrooms.

a toilet smuggler

A toilet smuggling perp would probably do more time than a drug smuggler...

Don’t risk violating environmental regs!!!

This post and comments can really make one paranoid. When you’re older, you can’t hold it as long, so it’s hard to avoid public toilets.
