How the Horrific 1918 Flu Spread Across America

Haskell County, Kansas, lies in the southwest corner of the state, near Oklahoma and Colorado. In 1918 sod houses were still common, barely distinguishable from the treeless, dry prairie they were dug out of. It had been cattle country—a now bankrupt ranch once handled 30,000 head—but Haskell farmers also raised hogs, which is one possible clue to the origin of the crisis that would terrorize the world that year. Another clue is that the county sits on a major migratory flyway for 17 bird species, including sand hill cranes and mallards. Scientists today understand that bird influenza viruses, like human influenza viruses, can also infect hogs, and when a bird virus and a human virus infect the same pig cell, their different genes can be shuffled and exchanged like playing cards, resulting in a new, perhaps especially lethal, virus.

We cannot say for certain that that happened in 1918 in Haskell County, but we do know that an influenza outbreak struck in January, an outbreak so severe that, although influenza was not then a “reportable” disease, a local physician named Loring Miner—a large and imposing man, gruff, a player in local politics, who became a doctor before the acceptance of the germ theory of disease but whose intellectual curiosity had kept him abreast of scientific developments—went to the trouble of alerting the U.S. Public Health Service. The report itself no longer exists, but it stands as the first recorded notice anywhere in the world of unusual influenza activity that year. The local newspaper, the Santa Fe Monitor, confirms that something odd was happening around that time: “Mrs. Eva Van Alstine is sick with pneumonia...Ralph Lindeman is still quite sick...Homer Moody has been reported quite sick...Pete Hesser’s three children have pneumonia

The treatment was aspirin.
Also the cause of death.

Public health was better protected in the days before HIPPA when the infected were named and folks could determine whether or not they had come in contact with them.

QT signs helped, too.

Interesting that it had a two wave factor.

This virus seems to come in two waves in a short time frame.

We don’t have much information as to how and why people are deemed recovered. For example, a faulty test?
They then get it again. Like the Iraeli from the Japan cruise ship.

It was just the apocalypse flu planted by the Deep State in China to distract you from the good economy. Or something.

Flawed test is the most likely result. We shouldn’t let people out of quarantine for at least a month.

True story. My grandfather was in the army in WWI. He was an immigrant from Serbia and they did not want to send him overseas because of that. Nearly all in his group died from the flu. Many doctors examined him and could not find out why Jovan did not get it. He told them it was because he ate garlic.
Love of garlic runs in our family. The commander also singled him out to show the others how to do a bayonet attack on an enemy. Jovan was fierce and let out a blood curdling scream as he attacked. The commander said - OK everyone do it like that.

I was in Whole Foods tonight for a few items and some old lkoot in my isle was warning the stock kid that all the schools in Japan had been shut down and soon it would happen here. I said that is not going to happen in passing. The old koot aka OK, slowly turned and said, predictably, “What are you a Trump fan?” To which I could only reply...Build the Wall! Lol. I have fun wherever I go!

not as bad, but 2017-2018 flu season was pretty bad:

26 Sept: 2018: AP: CDC: 80,000 people died of flu last winter in U.S., highest death toll in 40 years
In recent years, flu-related deaths have ranged from about 12,000 to — in the worst year — 56,000, according to the CDC...
CDC officials called the 80,000 figure preliminary, and it may be slightly revised. But they said it is not expected to go down.
It eclipses the estimates for every flu season going back to the winter of 1976-1977. Estimates for many earlier seasons were not readily available.

I wonder if the huge increase in flu deaths is related to the aging boomers getting flu while ultra old. The more old boomers the more deaths from old age and winter cold and flu.

Heath care in China today is at that 1918 level of care.

Of course the ratios are high.

https://www.vox.com/2018/9/27/17910318/flu-deaths-2018-epidemic-outbreak-shot

80,000 Americans died of the flu last winter. Get your flu shot. That’s more than the number killed in traffic collisions, from gun violence, or from opioid overdoses.

Seasonal influenza is a killer, even in milder years. Lately, mild flu seasons tend to kill about 12,000 Americans, and more severe flu seasons kill up to 56,000.

“They then get it again”

you’re lying AGAIN! As usual ...

in the video below at 33:29 in Trump’s coronavirus press conference today, Anthony S. Fauci, head of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Fauci was specifically asked about the possibility of coronavirus variants and the possibility of reinfection after recovery and he answered as follows:

Question:

One more technical question. Have you determined whether there are any variants of this virus so that a person who may have gotten it and then gotten over it, could get it again?

Dr Fauci:

No, there’s no indication that that’s going on at all. If this virus acts like other viruses, which I have no reason to believe it won’t, once you’ve gotten infected and recovered, you’re not going to get infected with the same virus.

And AGAIN.. I am telling you again to stop posting to me. I do not want to interact with you.

Btw, if you had followed this you would know there are numerous cases of getting it again. First came out in China and since seen elsewhere

You think that the 40-50 million or more people who died of the “Spanich Flu” around the world all used aspirin? Or even had aspirin then? LOL

amazing that you seem to think that you know so much more than Anthony S. Fauci, head of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a world-renowned infectious disease expert who obviously has access to massive amounts of information more than what you thnik you are gleaning from the fake stream enemedia ...
