I'm looking for recommendations from those of you who are seasoned in studying the Bible. If you use a specific study Bible, which do you like?
I've used Homan and Life Application. Both are good. I also have e Sword which is a good study tool.
Strong’s Concordance.
Most of it is based on the Textus Receptus.
Matthew 2:14 "Many are called but few are chosen" only appears in TR bibles. The new translations (ESV,NIV,NASB) omit it. This is just one example, but IMO the most profound.
I use The Thompson Chain KJV, and also Matthew Henry Commentary is excellent on the Old Testament
A few key principles of Bible study:
A verse taken out of context is a pre-text. Every scripture must be understood in the context in which it is written. You will often err to pull verses out and try to make them stand by themselves.
Scripture interprets scripture. A full understanding of any truth in scripture can only be understood along with other scriptures on the same or related subjects. Seek answers to your questions about passages or scriptures in scripture itself rather than going to commentaries, no matter how good the author is. It is better to seek to find your own answers in your own study. THEN go to the best commentaries to validate your own conclusions.
BECOME A SERIOUS STUDENT of the Bible on your own. Use footnotes, thesaurus, concordances. Learn to hear from God directly through His Holy Spirit, and then for confirmation and balance refer to godly and Christ-centered teachers.
Yep. I typed 22:14 and it got changed to 2:14.

You might remember that the KJV deliberately mistranslated words to keep it “High Church”. They were ordered to by King James, who said, “No Bishop. No King.”

I assume you meant Matt 22:14

Haley’s Bible Handbook and crudebn’s Bible Concordance
Nelson NKJV has good notes and is beautful, especially the illustrated one. The Faithlife Study Bible either in NIV or NKJV is good, but no cross references.
The ESV probably has the best notes, but leans Calvinist, as does Scofield and MacArthur. Just in case you needed that info.
For just good, straight no editorializing go with a Thompson Chain Reference.

Yes, the Bible is closed book absent the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Seek His presence every time you approach any translation. Don’t fully rely on commentators (as excellent as many are) but accept the counsel in this thread to pray, study and make your own notes - we are all unique and have something unique to share with the body of Christ.
It is helpful to understand all this in the light of some very important scholars and their response to the Gospel. Jewish scholars who study Isaiah 53 and still cannot see Jesus continue to amaze me.
Do the following:
Get Robert Alter’s three volume translation of the Old Testament. Not a Christian, but brilliant in Hebrew literature.
Get a Greek/Hebrew/English interlinear translation.
Get a New Testament which has the three synoptic Gospels printed with matching sections. A “parallel” translation.
Tischendorf’s annotated KJV based on his recovery of Codex Sinaiticus is very helpful and available from the Dolores Bookstore of Gene Scott’s ministry (now run by his widow, Melissa).
I make do with the NKJV and NIV for teaching (”Nearly Inerrant Version :)”

They're all good. I really don't like the 2011 NIV, though.
My point was that the modern translations DO include Matthew 22:14.
I’ve considered also getting MacArthur’s study bible as have heard good things about it..
