Cuomo Says New York’s Christopher Columbus Statue Represents ‘The Italian-American Legacy,’ Supports Keeping It

After statues of Christopher Columbus were defaced around the country this week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that he supports keeping Manhattan’s statue of the Italian explorer, saying it represents “the Italian-American legacy” in America.

Asked by a reporter at his daily coronavirus press briefing whether it is time for the 14-foot marble statue in Columbus Circle outside Central Park to go, Cuomo responded that while he understands the feelings surrounding the controversial historical figure, he supports keeping the monument.

“I understand the dialogue has been going on for a number of years,” Cuomo said. “The Christopher Columbus statue represents in some ways the Italian-American legacy in this country and the Italian-American contribution in this country.”

“I understand the feelings about Christopher Columbus and some of his acts, which nobody would support,” continued the Democratic governor, who is of Italian heritage. “But the statue has come to represent and signify appreciation for the Italian-American contribution to New York, so for that reason I support it.”

So we can be selective? How about we apply that to all the statues?

IIRC, Columbus was the first to suggest slavery as the way to make the country successful.

Senator Geary: Uh, Mr. Chairman, I would like to verify the witness's statement.

For years now a growing number of my constituents have been of Italian decent, and I've come to know them well.

They have honored me with their support and with their friendship.

Indeed, I can proudly say that some of my very best friends are Italian-Americans.

However, Mr. Chairman, at this time, very unfortunately, I have to leave these proceedings in order to preside over a very important committee, my own committee.

But before I leave I do want to say this: that these hearings on the Mafia are in no way whatsoever a slur upon the great Italian people.

Because I can state from my own knowledge and experience that Italian-Americans are among the most loyal, most law-abiding, patriotic, hard working American citizens in this land.

And it would be a shame, Mr. Chairman, if we allowed a few rotten apples to give a bad name to the whole barrel.

Because from the time of the great Christopher Columbus up through the time of Enrico Fermi right up until the present day, Italian-Americans have been pioneers in building and defending our great nation.

They are the salt of the earth, and they're one of the backbones of this country.

Cuomo, and other Italians, should hire the LGBTQ community to find a link to Christopher Columbus being an overt homosexual, with pedophile tendencies. That should be enough to keep the statue erect.

Let’s just see how long that lasts. Don’t worry, they’ll get him to change his view.

Columbus helped introduce diversity to North America. For that, he should be praised.

“I understand the feelings about Christopher Columbus and some of his acts, which nobody would support,”

How in the hell can anyone apply 2020 'wokeness illogic' to 1490s circumstances.

At that time, sailors were routinely railed, beaten for small infractions and slavery was routine through out the entire world.

Every nation state that conquered another, took anything they wanted including making slaves of the conquered.

What did Columbus do that is so inflammatory that the mob tears down his statues?

Columbus enslaved thousands of natives on the islands he discovered. His abuses of them was so notorious that was one of the reasons Spain fired him.

The statue represents Italian legacy for sure but more than that it represents the spread of western civilization.

This is the Inquisition of our times. An Iconoclasm by those that have no tolerance for sin, and give no chance for redemption. Admit your sins and then die, that is the command.

Christopher Colon set off to discover America just so he could annihilate the indigenous people and import Africans to enslave. That was what he wanted to do even before he knew there was a place called America. Besides, he was a Jooo!/s

The children of the Animal Farm in NYC are about to start a ditch Cuomo campaign, which will make Cuomo a “centrist” but may cost him a NY state primary against a true Leftist to oppose his Liberalism.
