Good family-friendly films to watch for the Halloween season?
10/10/2020

Can anyone here recommend good scary horror, sci-fi films that are suitable to watch with kids? My children are 9, 12 and 14 so they are too old for the young kiddie stuff but I don't want them watching anything with lots of blood and gore and profanity. I'm not interested in those types of films.

Films I have on DVD and have watched with my kids include Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Mummy (1932), The Black Cat (1934), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) so I'm looking for films like this.

I have other films like Burnt Offerings (1976), Jaws and the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake but I don't think they are ready for that.

Anyone have suggestions?

Another great KDrama, one of my all-time favorites: Masters Sun.

The older Disney shorts which were Halloween related were always good. Looney Toons, too; the Ghostbusters parody was great. I grew up watching those, and I’m an 80’s baby.

You can find them on YouTube and queue them up.

I also recommend Spooky Scary Skeletons, the animated short. That one’s from the thirties, I think.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, for a light-hearted spoof with Don Knotts.

“Great series Heartland from Canada..”

Wow Heartland is awesome. I watch it and think; television can be really really good when done right, but I don’t see any other shows even close.

The family values it shows are great, with the exception there is no talk of faith at all either way.

There isn’t a show like it; I just don’t understand why there its a show made in the US as good.

The sad thing is you can’t get Hold that ghost by Abbott and Costello online but only on dvd, you have to buy it now if you want it by Halloween.

“House on Haunted Hill (1959); Scared the bejeebus out me when I first saw it.”

Heck yeah! I really don’t do horror movies, made it about 5 minutes into that and was still scared FOR YEARS.

The Thing from Another World, the 1951 version, and Forbidden Planet.

Two we watch every October. 🎃

Kids that young have the attention span of a gnat. It doesn’t matter which one you pick, their attention will be diverted to something else in the first 5 minutes.

Then you’d better never watch the 1963 The Haunting, which I think is the ONLY scary movie out there.

This is short but very cute. Racketeer Rabbit/bugs bunny *and Edward G Robinson, well, sorta ;)

The original Blob with Steve McQueen is a hoot.
NOT the remake.
Also cheezy fun horror
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Jack Frost 2 Mutant Snowman
Scary but cool = ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind
