Republican Sen. Josh Hawley on Thursday accused the Pentagon of preparing U.S. armed forces for culture wars rather than real wars after their humiliating 'defeat' against British Royal Marines in a training exercise.
U.S. forces had to ask for a 'reset' halfway through the five-day mock battle in the Mojave Desert as they took heavy simulated losses.
It comes with the Pentagon already under intense scrutiny, following the hurried withdrawal from Afghanistan and Taliban takeover.
And this week the US Navy fired a nuclear submarine's commanding Officer, executive Officer and chief of the boat for after their vessel collided with an 'uncharted seamount' in the South China Sea.
Hawley said competitors such as China would be baffled by the U.S. approach.
'They're probably wondering why it is that people like General Milley and Secretary Austin spend so much time recommending books on white rage, on critical race theory and are not more focused on warfighting,' he told the 'Ingraham Angle' on Fox News.
Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, attracted the fury of conservatives earlier this year when he said he wanted to understand 'white rage' and why thousands of people attacked the U.S. Capitol Building in January.
During the same House hearing, the country's first Black secretary of defense, Lloyd Austin, also defended the military's efforts to address racism and extremism.
Hawley said Pentagon leadership should let warfighters do what they are best at.
'I mean, here's my view, Lord, we've got the best soldiers, airmen, Marines in the entire world,' he said.
'Our soldiers are amazing warfighters. Let them fight,' he said.
'Train them to fight. Let them do what they do best and stop using the military as a giant social experiment, which is what the left seems to want.'

General Milley is probably as much of a general as Doctor Fauci is an MD (ie. not licensed to practice medicine anywhere in the U.S.).
Milley barked back at Hawley: “I take my orders from my President and Commander in Chief Joseph Biden, not you Senator.” :)
DoD will use the embarrassment to ask for more money to improve “readiness”. But we all know where the money would go, and it wouldn’t be to produce better fighters.
In DC everything is about more money to support the lifestyles of the elites.
No matter how they are "dressed" they will make excellent targets if they come for my guns.
The gubmint violated posse comitatus at Waco, so they would in a gun grab as well.
Despite having some validity, Hawley seems to be pushing hard for a higher office - he’s approaching ‘Schumer-level’ Attention-Whore capability.
bkmk
It’s my understanding that the areas surrounding D.C. are the most affluent in the country.
That should tell anyone all they need to know about the state of our country
Hawley should have barked back “Oh, given your history I thought you took your orders from Speaker Pelosi and the Deep State rather than from the president of the United States.”
I remember way back in ‘77 driving my POV out to a site where one of my squads was training in an open field, away from the motor pool. It was in August, and there were no training funds remaining.
I received my additional training by volunteering for temporary duty with a sister battalion participating in Reforger ‘77.
I received some derision from that, but I had the last laugh, when my platoon was the only one of four platoons to pass during a tactical evaluation.
There’s an element of truth to what you’re saying about Hawley. IMO, too much emphasis is being placed on this routine training exercise. I’m sure there were many great lessons learned, that both sides benefited from it.
Might be time to slash the military budget
“Milley barked back at Hawley: “I take my orders from my President and Commander in Chief Joseph Biden”
He said that to Lessie Holt last night on NBC news.
I heard that some of the men guarding the station were busily engaged with changing their feminine hygiene products.
Apparently one piece of pertinent information that was left out of the story was that the British Marines were part of a composite force made up of Royal Marines, Emirati troops, Dutch and Canadian troops and (surprise surprise) U.S. Marines as well. So if U.S. Marines did surrender, as claimed, they surrendered to U.S. Marines among others.
Marine Corps Rejects Reports That It ‘Surrendered’ To British Forces During Exercise
Yeah I saw that and watched so many people overreact on YouTube. the design of the exercise put the 3rd Marine Regiment into the worst possible scenario in desert warfare: close quarter battle in urban terrain without the benefit of its key advantage: brut firepower.
