'It feels like enslavement': This working mom owes $240,000 in student loans. Now she's fighting for full cancellation to live her American Dream 'freely.'

One of Richelle Brooks' dreams is to send her two children to college without taking out any loans. She knows firsthand how taking out a loan to pursue higher education can amount to crippling debt.

"My daughter wants to be an anesthesiologist. My son wants to be a computer engineer. Two little Black kids want this for their future," Brooks, 35, told Insider. "And this country is telling me it's impossible for me to get them there. It's a terrible, hopeless feeling."

Brooks borrowed $203,000 collectively to attend undergrad, graduate, and doctoral studies. And over the years, has accumulated over $30,000 in interest.

"Yeah, $240,000," Brooks said.

In 2020, she decided to politicize her inability to pay back her loans. Apart of the Debt Collective, she joined a group of strikers called the "Biden Jubilee 100," calling on the president to cancel student debt within the early days of being in office.

Brooks' American dream is simple.

"My hope is that if my student loan debt balance is canceled, I can start saving for them and planning for their future," she said. "But I'm also hoping that we can get a free college education so that I don't have to also worry about how to finance their future either."

Living in California as a single mother is financially taxing, she said. She works as a principal in South Los Angeles, a career which she adores, but she often has to have a side hustle to live comfortably.

With the burden of student loan debt, saving money for the future is not a luxury for many Black borrowers.

On a macro-related topic...

There is something like $30 trillion of debt in this world - personal, biz, govt at all levels.

It ain’t ever going to be paid back.

It will be renounced.

The WEF is pushing a “you’ll own nothing and be happy.”

So who gets all the “stuff” you will no longer own??

Elites? My guess.

Gov’ts - gotta happen to have socialism.

A day of reckoning is coming fast and it will be ugly.

From Arizona PBS: Brooks, 34, is now a principal at Matrix for Success Academy in South Central Los Angeles. She was the first in her family and one of only a few among friends to get a post-graduate education. She also has student loan debt that she believes she will never be able to repay.

My guess is she makes too much money to qualify for the Biden hand out

as long as the schools have no financial skin-in-the-game for student loans, this will continue

“Are they exempt from consequences because of the color of their skin?”

Yes, and because the GOP supports that policy.

Depends on is she married or not.
If she has a free-loader spouse, she’s good to go.

Unlike all my fellow freepers, I have to say I agree with that working mom. Education is a basic human right. I don't care that it's not contained in the Constitution - it's still a basic human right, the most fundamental human right we have as human beings, so an amendment should be added to our Constitution.

I believe the government should pay for certain selected persons' educations, at all levels of study, no matter the field of study, and no matter how many degrees they get. And I believe the President is the one who should pick and choose who is and who isn't eligible for free education, paid by the government.

I doubt she is paying a penny off in her student loans. She’s a rip-off artist.

There is lots of ‘gimme dat’ mentality these days. And it is not limited to black folks who want free stuff.

How about Wall Street that has no problems when the Congress authorizes the FED to print billions in new debt?

Socialism works great until you run out of OPM.

Our student workers in the library make $15.00 an hour and usually work at least 10 hours per week. So $15.00 per hour x 10 hours x 30 weeks = $4500 per year. Work 40 hour a week during the summer and breaks and Christman say 15 weeks and we have $10.00 x 40 x 15 = $6000. So $10,500 a year.

The $10.00 per hour during the summer in conservative in today’s labor market.

By the way, don’t most doctorate programs offer stipends and tuition waivers?

She seems to have taken the financial advice of AOC “If you can’t afford something just pay for it and you can have it”

She can’t pay back a student debt on a Principle’s salary ????

It looks like some of the money went into beauty products and food.

Notice that it does not say Brooks GRADUATED, only that she attended

I can’t even begin to tell you how pissed I am that this is even being considered. So you get to jump on my back as long as you don’t make $125,000/year or you and your spouse make less that $250/000/year. Tell me this is pure vote-buying.
