AOC Shuts Down Critic of Student Debt Relief: 'Not Every Program Has to Be for Everybody'

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes Americans should be more supportive of one another — and that we can start by embracing President Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness plan.

On Saturday, one of Ocasio-Cortez's Instagram followers asked her, "How does cancelling student debt help us who paid their loans?" The New York representative, 32, respectfully took issue with the question and offered a lengthy response explaining why.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again: Not every program has to be for everybody," Ocasio-Cortez replied, mentioning other programs that use taxpayer dollars to benefit specific populations — like first-time homeowner benefits, Medicare for senior citizens, and roads that even public transit users help fund through taxes.

To further contextualize why people who were "blessed enough" to have already paid off their debts should support student loan relief, Ocasio-Cortez compared the issue to climate change.

"The challenges we as a society and world are facing are so enormous and so stark that they have the capacity to overwhelm any individual wealth or power. For example: The rich will not be able to run from climate change no matter how many may want to believe they can buy their personal way out of it," she wrote.

"In light of the ecological, economic, and social challenges we face, our society's ability to triumph and prevail actually depends on our capacity for SELFLESSNESS over SELFISHNESS," she continued. "That's why if you're upset now about student loan forgiveness, you are not ready for climate change."

I totally agree. I think every American should be outraged when even one American is defrauded by economic illiterates and snake oil salesmen acting under color of law (or EO).

Okay, AOC, fair enough... Please exclude me from your New Green Deal.

Thank you in advance.

“like first-time homeowner benefits, Medicare for senior citizens, and roads that even public transit users help fund through taxes”

First time homeowners benefits should go away. People should choose between renting and buying based on their personal economics. Government should not be benefiting homebuyers using the taxes of non-homeowners.

Medicare for senior citizens. Medicare is paid for by payroll taxes specifically to fund Medicare throughout one’s working career. Some high income Medicare recipients also pay additional into Medicare in retirement. So Medicare is a self funding program, paid for by the beneficiaries. If you live long enough you receive a return for what you’ve put in.

Roads. Roads are primarily paid for with gasoline taxes. The more you drive the more gasoline you use and therefore the more you pay for use of the roads. Users of roads pay. People who don’t use roads don’t pay. Seems very fair. She is obviously ignorant about public transit. The federal government, and many state governments, use highway money from the gasoline tax to subsidize public transit. Users of public transportation aren’t subsidizing roads through their taxes. It is people and business using the roads who pay for public transit through gasoline taxes.

AOC once again shows her ignorance. However we must remember the people elected to office are the choice of the constituents. It appears the voters of her district place a high value on stupidity.

How am I suppose to “embrace” the gubermint sticking it’s hand in my pocket and stealing my money to give to some one to pay their loan! I did not take out that loan. Any damn loan I’ve taken out I had to repay. They can pay off their damn loan!

And with Medicare, if you die before you’re eligible, the government keeps that money.

Er, how was this person “shut down”? This is one of these hyperbolic political claims like “Pundit X destroys Pundit Y” and all there is in reality is a mild criticism.

Co-incidentally, the $125k cutoff for “loan relief”, just a tad above cortez’s salary.

I have no problem being supportive of Americans who work hard, pay off their loans, raise their kids, stay married, etc.

Slackers on the other hand....

In that case I’m sure AOC won’t mind if the Republicans run on a platform of giving $10K to anyone who never went to college but is actively working in a blue collar job.

That ignorant slut couldn’t shut a trash can lid. Of course, People Mag is not exactly a place where one pursues anything short of silly articles about nothing written by folks who struggle to get their IQs into two digits.

Like they usually do.
Doesn't take one day to prepare a good lawsuit.
