The Boston City Council is taking aim at Walgreens after the company chose to close three stores in Mattapan, Hyde Park, and Roxbury.
The council plans to use their legislative powers to stop Walgreens from opening any future stores in the city unless they halt the closures. An ultimatum like this is not unprecedented. Former Mayor Thomas Menino sent a letter to Chic-Fil-A, telling the company not to open in the city because of their views on same-sex marriage.
"We can use whatever leverage we have, which is our zoning code, and leverage that to get them to make sure they come back to the table," explained Brian Worrell, the City Councilor for District 4. The Walgreens closure on River Street in Mattapan is within his district.
Without the three locations, the council believes pharmacy deserts will be created. They say the majority of residents in those areas don't use cars to get around.
"We are talking about predominantly working-class Black and brown communities that relied on Walgreens for many, many years, " said Worrell. "Now we are stripping a major resource away from them. We are talking about places where communities have got their food, their medication, their COVID vaccines."

Almost certainly bad behavior predominantly by a certain race caused the store closures.
It’s long past time for an honest discussion about race that no one seems to want to have.
pharmacy desert? puhlease. There are now ‘on-line’ pharmacies. Utilize them. The 3 stores are probably operating at a loss and the area is probably crime infested.
Government policies created the conditions that make it impossible to operate businesses in these places, and now that same government is demanding those businesses remain in operation!!
They’d better or every Democrat run city will use the same tactic against them and every other store chain in America.

They already have a “street pharmacy” on every other corner. Why do they need Walgreens?
It has to be because of crime & shoplifting. No business closes if they are profitable & safe. I wish people would at least be honest about why a business closes.
This whole debacle reminds me of what could’ve happened during the pandemic. Many ‘non-essential’ businesses defied the rules and tried to stay open, with the govt bringing the hammer down. But, what if an ‘essential’ business (say all the grocery stores) decided to shut down to protect their employees’ health? Where would people get food? Well, “that’s their problem”, the store owners might say. I bet the govt would’ve had no issue forcing them back open at gunpoint (or to seize the businesses and their inventories for themselves).
Mumbles Menino did the same to Walmart . Would not allow them to open in Boston . They built outside the city and it’s a third world country when you go to them .

I stopped doing markets in Murderpan 30 years ago...it has not improved since. Of course, now it remains a “fresh produce food desert”. That’s the latest thing I’ve been told about why we must attend farmers markets in darngerpus areas. We got tired of watching them hose the blood off the sidewalk and being cased. I’m with Walgreens.
So you do not own a business in Boston. You only manage a business, doing all the work. The real owner is the city.
This fits in well with leftist goals. Their biggest one is for all the means of production to be owned by the government. They move closer to it every day.
Never mind that Chic-Fil-A had no policy whatsoever on gay mirage, the hysterical reaction was due to the owner stating his personal beliefs.

Boston is another Democrat sh__ hole. They can’t force Walgreen’s to do anything.
Democrats defend their incompetence by attacking private businesses.
You don’t necessarily need a pharmacist on premises. Person shows up, drops off prescription, which gets scanned, remote pharmacist fills it and prescription is there for pickup.
They can even do tele-presence for questions.
