Bill Gates Buys Nearly $1B Heineken Stake, Despite Not Being a ‘Big Beer Drinker’

A new report reveals that Bill Gates purchased 3.76% stake in Dutch drinks giant Heineken Holding NV last week in spite of the billionaire Microsoft founder’s previous admission that he was “not a big beer drinker.”

A filing by the Netherlands’ Financial Markets Authority said the shares were purchased on Feb. 17. Heineken Holding owns a controlling stake in brewer Heineken NV. Gates purchased the shares from Mexico’s FEMSA, which is selling out of the brewing company.

A separate filing from the same day showed that FEMSA sold all 18 million shares it held in Heineken Holding. Shortly after, Gates purchased 10.8 million shares, worth $939.87 million at current market prices, triggering a disclosure requirement under Dutch stock market rules.

Gates has previously confessed to not being a “big beer drinker” in a 2018 “Ask Me Anything” chat session on Reddit.

“When I end up at something like a baseball game I drink light beer to get with the vibe of all the other beer drinkers. Sorry to disappoint real beer drinkers.”

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the charitable organization launched by the billionaire and his former wife, wasn’t immediately available for comment.

Some of Gates’ previous purchases have been placed under notable scrutiny, such as his recent purchases of significant swaths of farmland across the United States.

In July of last year, Gates spent $13.5 million on a purchase of farmland in North Dakota, which earned opposition and a legal challenge, but was ultimately approved.

As of 2021, his largest holdings in the U.S. included 69,071 acres in Louisiana, 47,927 acres in Arkansas, 25,750 acres in Arizona, 20,588 acres in Nebraska and 16,097 in Washington state.

It’s an investment, not a grocery purchase.

Not a big beer drinker?

Let's examine the evidence.

Someone needs to send him a biography of Andrew Carnegie. At what point is he going to do something really useful with all that money? Free health clinics in inner cities? Scholarships for kids? A library or two?

It’s an investment, not a grocery purchase.

And The Liberty Daily asks: "Why?" With the elites, every decision they make is about money, and that's it. There are no nefarious reasons for Gates sucking up farmland -- he's doing it because he thinks there's a future in alternative meat, or for some other corporate investment reason.

Money, for these people, is the air that they breathe.

I wonder why he did that.

That area has been hammering their farmers pretty bad. If the cost of your ingredients and product go up that doesn’t translate to the shares being worth more, does it?

And it's a big piece of pie as far as share holder votes go.

Maybe he’ll shut the brewery down to conserve water?

By the way, how “green” is a brewery anyway?

A brewery is VERY GREEN! Look at all the CO2 greenhouse gases that gets sequestered into the bottles, cans, and kegs!

If you have money, the problem becomes what to do with it

If you have no money grasping that concept is hard, especially if you are anti business

Making a profit by investing money is literally making America. The reason America is America is largely the result of the buying and selling of land from the Atlantic all the way to the Pacific. The westward expansion was all about land. Land is the ultimate hard asset.

The wealthy in China and earlier in Japan, have come to America to purchase land simply because it is an indestructible hard asst.

I’m going to have to switch to Stella Artois. No more Heineken, Dos Equis, Tecate, or Amstel for me.
