Twitter’s former CEO has a new app that looks a lot like Twitter

The buzzy new social media app of the moment looks so much like Twitter it’s almost hard to distinguish the two. The profiles, timelines and colors are nearly identical. Even the creator is the same.

But under the hood, Bluesky, developed by Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey, is vastly different.

The app, which launched in a closed beta on iOS in February and on Android this month, runs on a decentralized network which provides users with more control over how the service is run, data is stored, and content is moderated.

Twitter is far too entrenched with hundreds of million users on a global level to be taken down by a start-up.

Wouldn’t Musk have made these guys sign non-compete agreements as part of his buy out?

That type of hubris can destroy. Companies come and go.

A forensic audit of the source code would probably show that much of it was lifted directly from Twitter e.g. stolen.

Good, maybe all the censorship nazis can stay over there.

A non-compete is not enforceable in the State of California, part of the reason for innovation and tech employees swinging back and forth.

I know Musk has moved resources to Texas though.

My first thought.

There have been free open source Twitter “clone” scripts out for a long time. So making a site just like Twitter has been easy to do for anyone who has web hosting. The difference here is he is apparently using P2P protocol so that it is decentralized. Looks like it will be supported by the member’s machines as both clients and server nodes. This is actually a good direction to move in our current internet environment. The security and privacy cannot be beat. I am currently working on a P2P system myself right now.

A forensic audit of the source code...

“Don’t forget that McDonald’s is nothing like McDowell’s. While McDonald’s has the golden arches, McDowell’s has the golden arcs. McDonald’s has the Big Mac, but McDowell’s has the Big Mick. They both have two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions. But McDonald’s buns have sesame seeds. McDowell’s buns have no seeds.”

“I can’t believe its not Censorship”...?

Be hard to censor. It will be like ZeroNet which by design is impossible to censor. It is all or none, like it or not. It will run in the deep web...

What is more bizarre is that Dorsey rolled over his ownership from public Twitter to Musk's private Twitter - so he still has a $1 billion position in the company he is cometiting against!

Guys Jack is the former CEO of Twitter. He wouldn’t have been writing the code, but if any of his employees at the NEW place were at the OLD one. THAT might be something, but this story talks about it being JACK’S company.

So, no non-competes, or stolen code for him.

Competition is good. Monopoly is bad, even when the monopolist is someone you like.
