I sleep with a sound machine to drown out the tinnitus.
I’m in bed usually by 9:30, up around 6:00.
I read a book when I go to bed...no phone and the TV is seldom used at night.

No stress.. retired and living the dream. Exercise 5 days a week but I’ll be damned if I can sleep through the night. I wake up about every hour but fall back to sleep.

Don’t take any prescriptions just vitamins.

About every 3 or 4 weeks I’ll get a goodnights sleep.

So the 7 healthy habits aren’t working for me.

Recent research has shown that seven thousand steps a day is related to longevity. Actually even four, five or six steps a day is good. And two shorter walks is better than one long walk. It’s easy to do 7k steps in two short walks.

Something to consider.

I do at least 5000 steps every day, and my average is right around 10,000. It’s broken up for sure. We do about 4-5,000 in our neighborhood (almost) every day (30-45 minute walk), weather permitting, when my husband finishes his work day. It’s a good time for us to connect and reflect on all the day’s happenings. The other steps are just part of my normal day. When I do only 5,000 steps a day, I’m sitting on my butt more than usual, probably reading a lot and posting on FR. ;) And it means it probably rained when he was finished with work.

Do you take melatonin or magnesium? Both help me.

I also take an ibuprofen (200 mg) with a lot of water before bed many nights. It helps me when I’ve had a long day.

I occasionally wake up at night, but very often get back to sleep within a few minutes. If I don’t, it means I’m really stressing over something. When that happens, I’m learning to put that worry in the river and watch it float away downstream. When it’s harder to see, it’s time to totally let it go and stay in my past.

Valid point.

Sometimes I think I will be one of the folks going to the new modern concentration camps. They won’t worry about my religion or heritage as much as they will worry about what conservative views I hold.

Melatonin hasn’t helped and I’ve tried that for a month at a time off and on. Magnesium I take daily..helps with the tinnitus as well.

Ibuprofen 200mg I take a couple probably 3 or 4 days a week before bed... SOP for the aches and pain!!

The melatonin I use is time released version. My husband doesn’t like melatonin, and he does fine without it.

Sometimes I add a half a Benadryl tablet to the evening vitamins if it’s been a few days since I got an unbroken night’s sleep. That usually helps. It’s what they put in Advil PM.

Pickleball is great exercise, but also produces many injuries to the older folks...

* * *

You’re right, FamiliarFace. The risk of injury is certainly a problem. But played in moderation, it’s hard to beat Pickleball,

In fact, the design of the sport enables seniors to play competitively with younger people.

The physical strength and endurance required in tennis, volleyball, or basketball puts those sports beyond the realistic range of seniors.

But because the game is 50% finesse and 50% strength, it’s a better sport for older people.

My wife once played with a overweight senior woman who could win lot of games by moving very little, but hitting soft “dink” shots or lobbing the ball beyond opponents’ reach.

In Japan where I play there are only 5,000 players across the country — versus about 5 million players in America. At 70 years old, I’m thankful to to get active in sports again, something I foolishly neglected for 35 years.

Now as far as protection from injury is concerned, I think playing inside a gym is pretty safe. Outside in the open air on a dedicated PB court is preferred. And to that end, an entrepreneur here built a beautiful two court facility that has a high ceiling and a tarpaulin coverage against the rain/sun. He also built that court with a softer surface under foot that is kinder to falls than blacktop pavement.

All the best.

Hey, how’s everybody doing? Sleep hygiene means “good sleep” in the vernacular. What else could you want ? ...

... what time is it?
