Degenerative diseases/conditions

Watching a film on Stephen Hawking and can there be anything worse inflicted upon us than a degenerative disease?

I pray I never suffer this fate if I do I want my life ended.

I'm talking conditions like: MND, Alzheimer's etc

Truly horrible and makes me wonder how if there is a God how his is allowed to happen.

Maybe some Freepers can answer this questions because I can't...

I'm just thankful to be healthy. It's a Blessing let us not forget.

"Makes me question things (like faith, etc) when I see people with these conditions. Just awful."

"God has a plan for each of us. Keep the faith."

I’m 85 and my wife will soon be 83, and we will be starting a new book that addresses these issues.

quit watching that, it’s from the devil. God said he healed (past tense) ALL of our sicknesses and all of our diseases.

Operate in faith

God, in first chapters of the Bible, lays out exactly why this happens. When we sinned, in Adam, sin and death entered the world.

We may not like it but do be fair. God does not avoid or equivocate the consequences of the fall of mankind. We tend to think it’s not a big deal. Misery and death remind us that on the contrary it is a big deal.

God delivered us from the eternity of this curse by providing a substitute Adam, Jesus. Trusting in Him, we will be redeemed from the horrifying degenerative diseases and etc that we all see. So there is a solution —- but it requires admitting you are a sinner in need of a Savior, something our sinful natural selves are very loathe to do. Our tendency is rather to blame God, or deny His existence.

Very true. Very few mammal species in the wild kingdom live past 3 scores and ten. We are designed to be eaten by dinosaurs or lions before age 70.

Severe pain and suffering can often come at any time. Especially at the end of our days.

But having a strong character with faith, courage, and wisdom is sufficient.

It’s OK to ask why. OK to question God.

It’s not OK to kill yourself. That’s a sign of weakness. A sign that you failed in matters of life and death.

Yep. My brother suffered with ALS, with his family, for about 5 years after diagnosis. Absolutely horrible way to go.

You got that right. I was diagnosed with end stage liver disease 6 years ago and was on the transplant list. I took myself off of the list 3 years ago. In addition, I survived colon cancer with the liver cancer (so far). When I got sick the first time, my most optimistic Dr. Gave me 5 days to live. That was 11 years ago. To see me, you would think I was in perfect health. In many respects, that is when I really began to live. I live my life in 3 month increments. I have many scans every three months (MRI’s, CT scans, bone scan, etc.) So, I mentally decide after my scans that I have 3 months to live. It works for me. But in reality, I could go at anytime. So be it! To be absent from this world is to be with God. In the mean time, besides receiving many blessings and miracles, I have been able to give many blessings to others. Jim, I know you have been through a lot, but think about the blessings you have passed on!

My 95 year old MIL has said this since she was in her 60’s, and she proves it everyday. She’s a feisty but loveably tough old gal.

The older I get, the more I can see life through the lens of eternity. I truly believe God’s will was for Adam and Eve to live forever, but since they had free will, they sinned, which, of course, He knew they would. The Bible says Jesus is the lamb of God, slain from the foundation of the world. It was His plan to redeem us, knowing we would sin, before we ever sinned, even before He created us. Sin brought death and disease. God not only provided for our redemption from sin, He also provided healing in the atonement. So why are not all healed? Lack of faith, doubled mindedness, praying amiss, sin, are a few the Bible mentions. One thing I know, even if believers are not healed on earth, we will be healed in Heaven, and that is forever. This life on earth is but a vapor, according to the Bible. When my sister died of cancer, I grieved that she was gone from me, but gloried in the fact that she, being absent from the body, was now present with the LORD, never to suffer again, and that I would see her again one day, and NEVER have to be parted from her again.

Romans, Chapter 5:

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

WE brought these things upon ourselves -- Adam, as our federal head, sinned...and we through him are guilty. But, the fact that there is hope shows that there IS "a God" through all this -- THE God -- who provided a way to be ransomed from an even worse fate than degenerative diseases: The Second Death.

I hate these things too; we all do. But, thankfully, God has a plan.

Just had a friend die of this a few days ago. About 62 years old. Last August he wasn’t feeling well. The Dr. thought he was dehydrated. He was in hospice a few months later.

Our lives, in the context of eternity, are infinitesimally short - no matter how long we live as mortals. Our suffering is also short, even though it is so challenging to our mortal selves. My belief is that to God what’s important is our existence in eternity, not so much our mortal existence here.

Also, when you think about all that could go wrong in each of our lives that does not, maybe we should see a miracle at work there as well. Why should we blame God for our suffering, or think our suffering is reason to question the existence of God, if we don’t consider the miracle of our existence in the first place?

I like your attitude! I thank God every day for my life- I had end stage liver disease too, but I received a new liver 2 1/2 years ago. I’ve been battling an overactive immune system for 30 years, and it ain’t over yet. I thank Him for every single day. I blame Him for absolutely nothing. I don’t believe that we are puppets on a string. I DO believe that He does watch and takes note of how we handle our problems. And, I do believe in the Ten Commandments-without them we cease to be a Civilization.

Your faith should never come into question because of someone’s disease; if anything, from my experience, your faith should be strengthened through it through prayer.

You have my sympathies for the moss of your uncle. I’m a terrible person to try to offer counsel or advice as I often make mistakes in my choice of words so I’ll leave it at that.

"Truly horrible and makes me wonder how if there is a God how his is allowed to happen."

His ways are not our ways - how can a good God allow human suffering?

No one knows the answer to that, does not mean, though, that God is not good. We just don't have the understanding. Ask Job about that.

John 9:1-3

9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

We all die of something. If my spinocerebellar ataxia doesn’t do it then something else will before then. In the mean time I’m enjoying the time I have left. Will despairing over the inevitable add one day to my life?
