Kenneth Eugene Smith has become the first person in history to be executed with nitrogen gas.
The convicted killer, 58, had a tight gas mask placed over his nose and mouth before a stream of 100 percent nitrogen gas suffocated him inside the execution chamber at the William C. Holman prison in Atmore, Alabama.
Smith was officially pronounced dead at 8:25 local time, following a 22-minute ordeal where he appeared to remain conscious for several minutes. He shook violently and pulled on the restraints on the gurney, continuing to breathe the nitrogen gas heavily until he succumbed and passed out.
In his final words, delivered through the gas mask on his face, Smith said: 'Tonight Alabama causes humanity to take a step backwards... I’m leaving with love, peace and light.'
He made an 'I love you sign' with his hands to his family in the witness box before he was strapped down, adding: 'Thank you for supporting me. Love, love all of you.'
He was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder-for-hire slaying of a preacher's wife in 1988, where he was paid just $1,000 for the hit.
Smith's pastor John Ewell told DailyMail.com before his execution that the killer was 'really struggling' with the reality of his imminent death, and officials said he barely touched his final meal of a T-bone steak, hashbrowns, eggs and A1 Sauce from Waffle House.

Interesting article with an interview of the preacher’s wife’s son. Seems that this Smith guy is a trickster when it comes to the death penalty. I bet he DID practice holding his breath and jerking around in an attempt to have them stop it.
In 2022 he was supposed to be given a lethal injection, but he got himself so dehydrated (on purpose) that they couldn’t find a vein to give it to him!
I was curious as to what happened to the preacher. He killed himself shortly after his wife was killed. He had a previous breakdown, was put on meds, came off the meds and that’s when he came up with the idea to have his wife killed.
I hope he received his $1000 worth

A quick and efficient hanging is still on the books most everywhere. Snap his neck, have a basket under his legs in case head is removed. Like a Ham, wrap him in twine.

I prefer hanging. Rope can be used over and over again. The bullets and gun powder are gone forever.
Not that give a crap about this POS but they should have put him in the gas chamber and mixed the nitrogen into the air system until its 100%. He would have died without knowing it. The mask over his face and dumping pure nitrogen all at once seems pretty crude.
Did he do that for his victim?
But if we do that, maybe China and Mexico will embargo fentanyl and we won’t be able to get any more.

I agree. If the jackass held his breath that’s on him. In the old days, if someone in the gas chamber held their breath, that just meant the eventual breath would be deeper.
Also, when workers are overcome with nitrogen, they fall unconscious right away, without enough warning to even get out of that space.
The murderer likely tried to make it as dramatic as he could.

I’ve read stories of babies that survived abortion and lived up to 8 hours afterwards before dying.
In hospitals and clinics that have failed abortions it’s called “comfort care” while the baby dies.
The baby, who is premature, struggles to breathe and often is left alone in a room with no one holding it. Sometimes nurses hold them but if they can’t the baby dies alone.
In some clinics like Kermit Gosnell’s they used sissors in the back of the baby’s neck to end the life of babies who survived abortion. This happened everyday because Gosnell sucked at being an abortionist.
Some clinics dropped the baby in a bucket of water if they survived.
Hmmm… 78% of Earth’s atmosphere is NITROGEN. With no O2 in the execution recipe, he died of suffocation.

In my earlier days, I spent hours in a closed room feeding color film into a film processor. In the development tank we used pressurized nitrogen from a gas cylinder to create bubbles that agitated the developer for the film. I experienced some temporary cognitive loss during that exposure.
It is essentially the same method being touted as the new method of euthanasia in Switzerland. The Swiss death society is looking a “pods” that fill with nitrogen and drop oxygen content in the body as a “human methods” of suicide.
“Waffle House food is okay! Probably the last place that makes normal waffles instead of the spongy “Belgian” style. The hamburgers are better than the major cheap chains.
I got to appreciate Waffle House when they decided not to enforce any mask nonsense.”
I stop for their grilled chicken salad. Evenings are uncrowded and service quick and friendly.
