Kenneth Eugene Smith has become the first person in history to be executed with nitrogen gas.
The convicted killer, 58, had a tight gas mask placed over his nose and mouth before a stream of 100 percent nitrogen gas suffocated him inside the execution chamber at the William C. Holman prison in Atmore, Alabama.
Smith was officially pronounced dead at 8:25 local time, following a 22-minute ordeal where he appeared to remain conscious for several minutes. He shook violently and pulled on the restraints on the gurney, continuing to breathe the nitrogen gas heavily until he succumbed and passed out.
In his final words, delivered through the gas mask on his face, Smith said: 'Tonight Alabama causes humanity to take a step backwards... I’m leaving with love, peace and light.'
He made an 'I love you sign' with his hands to his family in the witness box before he was strapped down, adding: 'Thank you for supporting me. Love, love all of you.'
He was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder-for-hire slaying of a preacher's wife in 1988, where he was paid just $1,000 for the hit.
Smith's pastor John Ewell told DailyMail.com before his execution that the killer was 'really struggling' with the reality of his imminent death, and officials said he barely touched his final meal of a T-bone steak, hashbrowns, eggs and A1 Sauce from Waffle House.

How long did it take the lady that he and his cohort stabbed and beat to death to die? Additionally, to add insult to injury, he and his buddy were paid a thousand dollars each to murder her. Who cares how long it took him to die as long as he is dead. He received a hell of a lot more mercy than him and his sidekick showed to the innocent lady.
If they’re gonna do that they might as well go back to lethal injections.

Yep. I was going to suggest hanging or firing squad. They’re cheap and instantaneous.
Don’t know if that is sarc or not (really should be) but from all REAL sources death by nitrogen only is VERY quick and almost unrecognizable by the victim.

I’ve gotten it at the dentist and didn’t care about anything that was going on. The dentist could have turned it all the way up and I would have died comfortably and happy.
He was deliberately not breathing it in and thrashing around so he could put on a show. Just a little bit is enough to calm you down.
Nevermind - it’s nitrogen, not nitrous oxide. Still, there would be no suffering if he would just breathe.
And in capital punishment in the Bible, not only are 2 or 3 eye-witnesses (a principle) required for conviction but those whose false testimony caused one to suffer are to receive the punishment that there false testimony resulted in. (Deuteronomy 19:15-21)
So what if murderers suffer for a bit......wait till they arrive in Hell!

There are no WITNESSES watching the child die.
Why can’t they just insert a tube (under local anesthetic - don’t wanna hurt the perp) into large vein and let them bleed out?
Ya just go to sleep and that’s it.

Knock the condemned out with general anesthesia and then put the nitrogen mask on.
As long as when you awake you are not REAL friendly with the doctor!
