On June 28, 1972, the Universal Amphitheatre hosted its first concert, a production of the Broadway rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar. The show was a hit and was extended until cold weather forced its closure.
Didn’t see it there on opening night, but did see it there shortly thereafter.
It really was a hit! The performances and music carried the day unmarred by special effects. The only effect I recall was a little UV in the stage light on Jesus, and a slight extra fluorescence brightness of his robes.
Wonderfully understated. With a good story line you don’t need overblown special effects.
You are referring to Herod the Great. The Herod Christ appeared before was his son Herod Antipas. That the one depicted in Jesus Christ Superstar. Of course Antipas was a evil guy too.

Herod the Great was the one who ordered the slaughter of the innocents when word reached him of the Messiah’s birth
I have never heard any versions of ANY of this music that are as good as or better than the original.
