Colorado State University (CSU) has unveiled its much-anticipated preseasonal hurricane forecast for the upcoming 2024 season, and the outlook is stirring attention.

Predictions indicate a staggering 23 named storms, with 11 expected to intensify into hurricanes, including five potentially reaching major status.

This projection stands as the highest ever issued by CSU in its April outlook, signaling potentially turbulent times ahead. Hurricane season begins June 1.

What sets this forecast apart is not only the elevated numbers but also the notable confidence behind the predictions. Unlike previous April outlooks, which often carry a degree of uncertainty, CSU’s meteorologists express a strong conviction in this forecast. The basis for this confidence lies in the formidable atmospheric conditions primed to fuel above-average hurricane activity throughout the Atlantic basin.

Key factors driving this heightened activity include record-warm sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic, setting the stage for robust storm development. Additionally, the anticipated transition to the La Niña phase further amplifies the likelihood of increased hurricane formation in the region.

I lived in hurricane country most of my 72 years. The CSU estimates are always, always wrong. They’ll ‘adjust’ their guesstimations as the season progresses.

"Hyperactive hurricane season"

"That's not like 'hurricane-hurricane', right?"

Every year just B4 hurricane season, the scare-mongers light up with their “it’s gonna be the biggest and baddest hurricane year on record”.

My first thought was: How accurate were they before?

I am going to venture a guess that they were inaccurate, and simply changed the criteria to define the storms they predict until it fits.

They do this every year.

Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn’t.

“changed the criteria to define the storms they predict until it fits”

Same thing with where they predict landfall is gonna be.

Last year a day or two before Ian hit they were all saying it was gonna hit Tampa.....then it actually hit the Ft. Meyers area.

How many people in Ft. Meyers took that as gospel, relaxed and didn’t prepare OR didn’t evacuate and should have?

When it comes to hurricane landfall 125 miles is considerable.

I don’t watch weather reports at all. Ever. I look out the window to check. If it is snowing...it is snowing.

If I lived in a hurricane zone, I would conduct myself as if the daily weather didn’t exist. If they said one was on the way, I would get OUT of the way.

Katrina was a natural oddity.....According to the media, weather or otherwise it was the only hurricane in history to only hit one city.
