‘I’ll pay you $500 to hire me...’: Job applicant sends unique offer to Bengaluru startup founder

The founder of Wingify received a unique proposition. "I'll pay you $500 to hire me. If I don't prove myself to be one of the best within a week you can fire me & keep the money," a job applicant wrote to him.

Sharing the screenshot on X (formally Twitter) Paras Chopra, founder and chairman of software company Wingify, said he was impressed with the pitch, adding he would obviously not take the money. "This is how you get attention!" he wrote.

“Looking forward to your rejection,” the message ended.

Opinion in the comments section was divided with some loving the attention-grabbing job application, while others thought it set a bad precedent.

One user wrote, "It also speaks about the sad state of jobs currently - where a candidate has to mention $$$ to get attention :)"

Wingify is a software company that Chopra started in 2009. A gold medalist from Delhi College of Engineering, he has been featured twice in the Forbes 30 under 30 list - India and Asia. Besides Wingify, he is also the founder of Nintee and VWO.

In the ever-evolving landscape of job applications, a wave of innovation has swept away the era of boring resumes and bland cover letters.

A remarkable incident in this regard was shared by Antimetal's CEO, Matthew Parkhurst, who recently received an internship application that came with a delicious twist, a box of pizza.

The "super excited" applicant attached their CV to the pizza box, capturing Parkhurst's trust. The internship seeker also attached a handwritten along with the Pizza box, expressing his desire to apply for the role of an engineering intern at Antimetal. He also said that the pizza was a "bribe" for the company's hiring team to visit his website.

The note, along with the pizza box, was shared by Parkhurst on X, where he said, "100% getting an interview."

The post garnered a lot of attention, with people joking about the guy getting an interview with the startup.

I think it’s illegal in California for an employer to request, or accept, money to hire someone.

It’s creative, nothing wrong with a guy who hustles.

I offered to work for a month free for a job I really wanted, it was the start of my lifetime career.

What are the odds that this really does go on in other parts of the world?

I like the pitch. Of course the boss wouldn’t take the money, but the attitude is right. Putting his money where his mouth is. I’ve interviewed hundreds of people many who claimed they would be the best. It’s a little braggadocio, though. The boss may be hiring someone who is as much a showman as employee. Could be a disturbance and cause internal disgruntlement. The last thing employers want is a lot of turnover or an employee with a large ego that may not fit with the culture. I don’t know the job requirements but maybe worth a paid internship. Employee pays nothing, the boss pays minimum wage for a week or two to acclimate with the work culture, and and if specific goals are met it becomes a full salary full time job.

I’ve never heard of someone doing this for a job.
It’s creative and bold, but one has to wonder why no one else has already hired this person.
Sometimes a Gift Horse can be taken at face value, with no need to “look at him in the mouth”.

I found myself in a similar situation after being laid off from the energy industry in ‘83.. I was ready to pay for employment. Not finding work at home I turned my job searches abroad. Best choice I made and decided to return to the US at retirement age. Go abroad young man if you can’t find work at home. Bad times are coming again under Bidenomics, you can bet your ass and everything else you have. Don’t bet on America as long as Biden is here.

It goes on here among Indian IT workers. It’s one of the reasons non Indians are being pushed out of tech. We aren’t part of the job payoff scheme.

They should hire that person and make him/her the keeper of the company fortune.

Pretty much everything in California is illegal, or heavily taxed, or under crushing regulatory burdens, or some combination of those...

Hey, I wonder if the same approach would work getting a job at the White House:

“Dear Joe & Jill:
I’ll give you $10,000 and kick back 25% of my salary if you will hire me to be the Assistant Deputy to the Deputy Assistant for Foyer Sweeping.”
