Posted on 4/7/2002, 2:32:07 AM by John Robinson
Installed the first candidate for a chat program.
Click here for Beta Chat (requires Java)
Out of the box this is ugly! But it is open source, and I can fix the ugliness.
The name of this product is NFC Chat, written by Lyrisoft Solutions, Inc. Source, etc available here
It supports chat rooms.
When you first sign in, it takes you to a list of rooms. Click a room to enter chat mode.

My biggest wishes that NFC Chat fails to provide are markup commands in chat (B, I, FONT COLOR, etc) and voice chatting.
But go ahead and give this a spin anyway.

Ditto. Can I just lurk [?], I'm a slow typer too!!
To: potlatch
Hard to lurk when your the only one there.
Seems more like voyeur. : )

Thanks.
To: John Robinson
Will there be a written record upon an IRC server?
To: John Robinson
John- could not connect...have I missed something, or is the chat site down for vamping?
To: RangeRatt
Are you running Windows 98?
I don't know if this program works, I've already had one other problem with someone not being able to connect.
Check back in a couple hours to days, and I'll have a more thorough answer for you... right now... I'm just trying this out, haven't used it much in the past.
To: John Robinson
I am not sure what I am using (sounds real professional, doesn't it?) since I am at work, on a LAN based workstation.
To: John Robinson
HELLO ... is any body out there ..

I can get the chat room with a list of about 7 participants but there is no place to type chat. harumpfff :-)
To: Mo1
Click on the link at the top to go in the chat room and try it out.....
To: blackbart1
Ah.
There are two columns when you first sign in. Rooms and Users. Double Click a room to join a chat room.
To: blackbart1
Was just going to give you a map - and you appeared... keep trying folks!
To: Mo1
Go up to the word BETA at the top and click on.
It loads the program....and then you log in with your screen name and password....and click log in or whatever.
Then the chat area comes up.....find the room you want on the left hand side....I think Beta Test is the one up now....HIGHLITE IT.....and go down to the bottom of the chat area and click on JOIN.....and there you are.
To type text, go down near the bottom of the chat area and there is a place for you to type. Type your message and hit enter.
Look at the buttons on the top r/h side and figure them out.....

Very nice.
I had no problems connecting with the Linux Mandrake 8.1 (with lots of updates) box here, using galeon 1.2 as the browser.
The fonts could be larger, but that's a minor complaint.
