Former First Lady Takes Breast Blooper In Stride
WICHITA, Kan. -- Former first lady Barbara Bush had something to get off her chest. So she wrote to a Kansas paper that misquoted her as saying she'd had three different breast sizes during her life.

It turns out she had actually said "dress size," and not "breast size."

The Wichita Eagle ran a correction earlier this month, but just got a letter from Bush.

The Eagle printed the letter, in which the former first lady noted that she had "become abreast of" the article.

She admits she's a "bosom buddy" of two presidents -- and said the article gave her children "much to laugh about."

I love women who are comfortable in their own skin.

She added a hand-written note at the bottom that she "was glad to get this off my chest!" LOL

Good grief, and I just got new glasses 3 weeks ago!

I thought your post said "Good motrin to you."

Glad to see you here on this bright, sunny morning. (spelling is rotten as well, I originally typed "Galled to see you here....)

That's funny - but it may be that kinda day. One computer has already cratered, and this one is not acting like it wants to live much longer. ;-)

I'm smiling widely.
No LOL's today, I woke up with a sore throat this morning, I'm trying not to talk much.
I was able to communicate by writing with my older children earlier, its not so easy with a three and five-year-old.
Lots of tea with honey and lemon today.

Thanks for the Barbara Bush story. Isn't it wonderful to hear of a lady who can laugh at herself?! what class...

Enjoyed the bit of feminist humor at the beginning of The Guild today. I copied it and sent it flying to friends. Hope that was ok? Have a great weekend all...

Barbara Bush certainly demonstrates grace, good humor and class. She must be a lot of fun to be around. What a contrast to the First Lady who followed!

Barbara Bush certainly demonstrates grace, good humor and class.

Remember the huge flap at Wellesley when Barbara was invited to be the Commencement Speaker. Remember the howls of protest?

I dug up her speech and here is a snippet:

Barbara Bush's Commencement Address

"The third choice that must not be missed is to cherish your human connections: your relationships with friends and family. For several years, you've had impressed upon you the importance to your career of dedication and hard work. This is true, but as important as your obligations as a doctor, lawyer or business leader will be, you are a human being first and those human connections -- with spouses, with children, with friends -- are the most important investments you will ever make.

"At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child or a parent.

...snip"Who knows? Somewhere out in this audience may even be someone who will one day follow in my footsteps, and preside over the White House as the president's spouse. I wish him well!

"The controversy ends here. But our conversation is only beginning. And a worthwhile conversation it has been. So as you leave Wellesley today, take with you deep thanks for the courtesy and the honor you have shared with Mrs. Gorbachev and me. Thank you. God bless you. And may your future be worthy of your dreams."

What's pathetic is that the Wellesley crowd just assumed they should object to her appearance. They didn't know why. They just knew they should. Oh well.

And now, for some news of the day:

A CARAVAN of car-crazy celebs roared away from the Plaza Hotel last night bound for L.A.'s Playboy Mansion in a "Cannonball Run"-style race to raise money for families of 9/11 victims. Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey, Donna Karan, Johnny Knoxville, Stephen and Billy Baldwin and models Jodie Kidd and Amy Wesson are among the 400 racers revving their engines for charity in the "Gumball 3000" race. ....

"We're doing this to raise money for the Twin Towers fund. All of the celebrities are donating something to auction off on eBay, and we're going to auction off two Ferraris after we're done," Cooper told PAGE SIX. "We're hoping to raise at least $1 million."

The caravan's first stop is at Washington's Union Station tonight, where Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) will greet the group behind the wheel of his red pick-up truck. page six

Also from Page Six:

We hear . . . THAT Michael Jackson - who performed at the Democratic Party fund-raiser at the Apollo on Wednesday night only after Bill Clinton personally asked him to[WHY??] - was all set to do a fourth song, "Thriller," when organizers asked him to stop because the show was running late

And from Neal Travis, more news of little George Stepalloverus:

YOU can pick your friends but you're stuck with your family, so little George Stephanopoulos is just going to have to go on putting up with the nutty nun who is his sister. George has gotten rich and famous from once being a loyal aide to Bill Clinton, but Maria Stephanopoulos has access to the Internet, which reaches even more people than George does in his ABC-TV commentary role.

Sister Maria, who is a Russian Orthodox nun at a convent in Jerusalem, has just jumped into cyberspace again with a bitter diatribe against Israeli troops and their efforts to quell Palestinian terrorism.

Maria has been heard from in the past ranting against what she thinks is Israeli imperialism, but now she has plunged back into the fray at a time when tensions in the region are at their highest. If Maria was just another person with strong views one way or the other, it wouldn't matter. But given her brother's highly visible position in both American politics and media, her comments could serve the Palestinian cause well.

"I'm not spreading propaganda," Maria insists in her current posting, before going on to claim that Israeli soldiers defecated on the floor of the West Bank medical center they had raided.

She charges the troops have been looting Palestinians' homes and appeals to American priests of all denominations to "get on the phone and ask your congressman and senator why the U.S. government is backing Israeli invasion into sovereign Palestinian areas, and why so many innocent civilians are being terrorized." (It's worth noting that WorldNewsDaily.com last week discounted one of Maria's reports it carried, to the effect that Israeli troops were raping Palestinian girls. That one turned out to be a hoax spread by a Palestinian schoolboy who also has access to a computer.)

I spoke with the newly married, soon-to-be daddy Stephanopolous yesterday. "She's committed and concerned - beyond that, there's nothing I can say," he offered. Maybe he'll have Maria on the show when he takes over (as I've tipped) as the host of the network's morning "This Week" show.

The "bitter liberal" take on Karen Hughes, from Liz Smith's column:

WHILE THE rest of America said "Aww!" fondly, upon hearing that President Bush's aide Karen Hughes was resigning from her position of power in order to "spend more time with her family," the Washington Post cast a jaundiced eye. [QUELLE SURPRISE]

Reporter Mark Leibovich noted that many people, including executives from Enron and Arthur Andersen, the embattled NASA administrator Daniel Goldin and the GOP's James Gilmore "were all afflicted with family longings that coincided with searingly difficult job circumstances." But in the end, Ms. Hughes, her 15-year-old son, Robert, and her husband, Jerry, homesick for Texas, won the benefit of the doubt, via "The Double Standard Excuse." In other words, a woman's concern for the men in her life, makes more sense than a man's concern for his family.

More Clinton detritus (clean up on aisle 4!), or "the rapist and the paedophile do Harlem":

We're still reeling from a loooong night at the Apollo with Michael Jackson, Bill Clinton and friends. The after-party was chaired by Gotham magazine publisher Jason Binn, a rising star among young Democratic fund-raisers. It was held at the Studio Museum in Harlem on 125th Street, just down the street from the Apollo. Harlem looks better than ever right now — it's a real comeback success story.

But more than a couple of people have said to me, "The whole Michael Jackson part of the evening was creepy." Yes, it was. And the idea of all those actors — paid extras — dressed up in garb from around the world like a bad postcard. Can it be that Jackson really thinks of each nationality in stereotypes? Sombreros, painted faces, forelocks, etc.?

Still, Michael brought with him a complete set of impressive special effects: two machines that threw flames from the stage skyward, plus a big video projection. He also had ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction member Dave Navarro (of all people) on electric guitar, which made a huge difference on "Black or White." Slash would have been proud. Speaking of the 'toon:

This Sunday at noon, C-SPAN II's "Book TV" will air a sound-only version of Bill Clinton's remarks at a party last week in honor of Rep. Peter King's new novel, "Deliver Us From Evil." That's because cameraman Richard Hall was prevented from videotaping Clinton at the Dubliner bar.

Hall told us he started rolling when Clinton showed up unexpectedly. After a few seconds, a King aide told Hall that Clinton's people wanted him to stop. Hall continued taping for another 15 seconds, until a strapping young man calling himself Doug him to stop. "The president[Uhhh, isn't that ex-president?] is a private citizen and,b> doesn't want cameras on him all the time[LOL! Oh please!]," Doug barked. Hall assumed he was a Secret Service agent and complied.

After his remarks, Clinton made a beeline for Hall. "Glad you're here!" the former president gushed. "I wish you had allowed me to tape your speech," Hall replied. A distressed Clinton asked, "What do you mean?" As Hall explained the situation, he heard Doug mutter, "Thanks a lot!" Then an apparently angry Clinton gave Doug hell. Nevertheless, Hall said, when he resumed videotaping, Doug came up and shut him down again.

It turns out that Doug Band is Clinton's personal aide, not a Secret Service agent, and had no authority to stop C-SPAN's camera. We hear he's now remorseful, but Clinton press secretary Julia Payne declined to produce him. "It's well known all over the world," she said, "that Doug has left many a cameraman in his wake." You have been a very busy reporter today. Thanks for all the posts. I feel so informed.

The bolding of Fred Thompson as a nice touch. I can be in DC in 8 hours, I wonder when the rally will get there.
