One day in the Garden of Eden, Eve calls out to God, "Lord, I have a
problem!"
"What's the problem, Eve?"
"Lord, I know you've created me and have provided this beautiful garden and
all of these wonderful animals, and that hilarious comedy snake, but I'm
just not happy."
"Why is that, Eve?", comes the reply from above.
"Lord, I am lonely. And I'm sick to death of apples."
"Well, Eve, in that case I have a solution. I shall create a man for you."
"What's a 'man,' Lord?"
"This man will be a flawed creature, with aggressive tendencies, an
enormous ego and an inability to empathize or listen to you properly.
All in all he'll give you a hard time. But he'll be bigger and faster
and more muscular than you, he'll be really good at fighting and kicking
a ball about and hunting fleet-footed ruminants, and not altogether bad.
"Sounds great," says Eve, with an ironically raised eyebrow.
But you can have him, only on one condition."
"What's that, Lord?"
"You'll have to let him believe that I made him first."
Sample: Bill Clinton was not natural at anything. He was the exact opposite; a contrived, artificial, highly scripted, poll-driven politician whose warm empathy with strangers in public was in stark contrast to his moody, self-involved crankiness in private. He is a man of abysmally low personal character who regards the truth--with splendid impartiality--as merely one of several options to consider before he speaks.
*****snip*****
Taking the former president at his word, Klein faithfully recounts the bite-sized achievements of Clinton's presidency. The list grows more trivial by the day as we see it framed by the events of 9/11 and the truly dangerous world Clinton left behind for us to cope with.......
And while I am musing here, why would a family who only wears black pantsuits even need to attend a fashion show?
You and me both, Granny! It's 37 degrees here in MA. We even had a dusting of snow two nights ago! And folks around here were complaining about temps in the 80s a couple of weeks ago. It will probably be a few weeks before we work back up to that! I'm just glad its raining for the next few days because I spent the last week or two working hard getting the yard repaired. Had to dig out the grass the grubs destoyed, kill the slimy little buggers, then put lime, new grass seed and fertilizer down. With the rain, I won't have to water the lawn for a few days.
Have you done any other garden work? I got a good start on clearing away the winter debris,,, but cold weather set it and everything is at a standstill. The tulips have pushed their way thru it all and are nodding in the wind.
Slugs are the next problem to combat,, lots of hosta in shady areas here. It will take lots of salt and beer.
We'd all be tempted to drop in for the party if it wasn't for the 'guests' you're inviting.
Come on over, Mae. I've saved the Corona's back,,,, we'll have us a party as we watch the slugs twist and die.
Geez, HLL, you ever met this type before? ;-)
That's the problem, she's NOT inviting them! LOL! They are just gate-crashers, like my grubs!!
Though a cold beer after killing little critters like that is, as Martha would say, "a good thing".
No, it has just been yard work so far. Once I get the last area cleared out, soil sifted clean of rocks, re-seeded and fertilized, I'm taking a break. I'll mow when I need to, but that will be enough for a while. I had put bulbs in last fall during the last yard marathon. We had dug up areas of the yard, put some of that black weed blocking fabric down and put mulch over it. In a few of those areas, I went back, split the fabric and put some bulbs in. The hyacinth and blue muscari have already bloomed and died. The tulips are up right now and are just beautiful. I didn't put enough of them in, but will rectify that this fall. I had a few bulbs try to push up through the fabric in areas I had forgotten that they had been planted several years ago. When I saw the bulges in the mulch, I cut the fabric open to let the plants through.
We're fixing to do a major remodeling job so I'm not going to spend a lot of time doing something that may be changed anyway. But last weeks thread with all the roses made me want to try my hand at them. After we remodel, I'm going to plant a couple of fragrant climbing roses on the south side of the house against the garage wall. It will be a tall, somewhat blank wall area because we're going to build a full floor over the garage for a new master bedroom suite. I'm hoping the rose will grow 10 to 15 feet high to soften that large wall area. I checked out some of the links given for the roses, and was just captivated by the variety of roses available nowadays! I'll be checking locally to see what will grow well here.
So that's where that saying came from, "dumping salt on someone" or telling others of someone's nefarious dealings. You can learn a lot from FR. Just stick around.
