Welcome to the USS George Washington

The USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) is a nuclear powered aircraft carrier built by the Newport News Shipbuilding Company of Newport News, Virginia. The keel was laid on August 25, 1986 and the ship was commissioned on July 4, 1992. Two nuclear reactors are used for propulsion (the ship is capable of steaming more than one million miles before refueling) turning 4 five bladed screws that weigh 66,220 pounds each. The GW can travel at speeds over thirty knots and is 1,094 feet long, 257 feet wide and has a height equal to a twenty-four story building (244 feet). The ship can accommodate approximately 80 aircraft and has a flight deck 4.5 acres in size, using four elevators that are 3,880 square feet each to move planes between the flight deck and the hangar bay. With a combat load, the GW displaces almost 97,000 tons and carries over 6,000 crew members. It can distill 400,000 gallons of water and serves 18,000 meals per day. There are over 2,500 compartments on board requiring 2,520 tons of air conditioning capacity (enough to cool over 2,000 homes). The ship uses two anchors that weigh 30 tons each, with each link of the anchor chain weighing 360 pounds.

Here are a few of the statistics that reflect the amount of time and effort that go into running the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73).

In an average year:
Medical sees 10,822 sick call patients, does 256 flight physicals, completes 1,599 physical exams, performs 103 surgeries, processes 3,097 x-rays, does 38,276 lab procedures, fills 16,811 prescriptions, and gives 11,385 immunizations.

In an average month:
Dental sees 500 patients requiring 200 exams, 150 cleanings, 53 tooth extractions, 10 crowns, and 75 fillings.

Disbursing processes 250 travel claims, maintains eight ATM's with a monthly average withdrawal of $320,500, and handles a payroll of $2,276,000 every two weeks.

In an average month:
Combat Systems Department processes more than 400,000 e-mail messages (2.4 million during a six month deployment) and operates over 1400 computers on 19 Local Area Networks.

A flight deck officer launches an aircraft from Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW 17) as other flight deck sailors look on.

An F/A-18 Hornet from the Fighter Attack Squadron Eight One (VFA 81) Rampagers prepares to launch

off the flight deck of the USS George Washington CVN 73.

Aircraft from Carrier Air Wing Seventeen ( CVW 17) fly high above USS George Washington. An F-14B

Tomcat assigned to the Fighter Squadron One Zero Three ( VF-103) Jolly Rogers, refuels from an S-3 Viking

assigned to the Antisubmarine Squadron Three Zero ( VS-30) Diamond Cutters while and F/A 18 Hornet from

What a fun person! Can you imagine going to FReep with her in the Xena outfit. The opposition might as well pack it in. LOLOL!

Here's some more silliness: Science solves mystery of odd socks

Scientific investigation of the odd sock phenomenon is not new. Researchers originally thought socks were actually disappearing by converting mass into energy according to Einstein's equation E = MC2. This is nonsense. A quick calculation shows that if the mass in a sock were converted into energy, it would take out your washing machine, your house and every structure within miles - in short, it would be the equivalent of a nuclear explosion.

Thank goodness for scientism. The odd sock problem hasn't been solved but at least we now know what's behind it.

Okay. I can sleep better at night.

That sock theory reminds me of the Law of Probable Dispersal of Excremental Matter, to-wit, "Whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed (also known as the 'How Come it all Landed on Me? law')"

A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that the Pledge of Allegiance is an unconstitutional endorsement of religion and cannot be recited in schools.

Just in from SanFrancisco.

I am going to start every speech I give with the Pledge of Allegiance. After it's over I will then say " What we just did is now unconstitutional in our schools."

Uh, I don't think we (Guild-types) would approve your risking your life on a trip to Afghanistan. Does your mother know?

It shouldn't be too much of a risk, I see it as a life experience. I was given a list of countries to go monitor elections for the International Republican Institute. The most interesting and most Non-African one was Afghanistan.

I also felt that since we were sending over young men and women to Afghanistan, it was the least that I could do to spend a week there making sure that they can have a democracy.

Good grief. I had ot turn the computer off because of thunderstorms. Just turned it back on 'cause there's a break in the clouds.

What in the world????? Unconstitutional?

I thought the world was spinning out of control this morning. The market's recovered, but now this stupid ruling.

Good grief.

Well lod, I guess you can add "declaring the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional" to that list. I sometimes wonder at the patience of God. I'm reading a book on Revelation (La Haye) and am beginning to quake at the judgement of God, too.

Drawing scrutiny and investor displeasure were $408 million in loans WorldCom had given to former CEO Bernard Ebbers. link

Just checked the FEC for contributions by Bernard Ebbers, formerly CEO of WorldCom. Looks like he spread the wealth around: Bob Kerrey, Deb Stabenow, Orrin Hatch, Charles Pickering, Richard Dewine, Roger Wicker, Thad Cochran, the RNC, Bob Smith, Ed Markey, Patrick Leahy, Al D'Amato, the Mississippi GOP and a few others (none to Bush).

Of course -

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats moved quickly on Wednesday to paint Republicans as too cozy with corporate interests following the WorldCom Inc. scandal, but Republicans said it was a business scandal with little election-year potency. story.

For what it's worth, Martha Stewart gave nearly $200,000 to Dems, including Hillary, Al Gore and Chuckie Schumer. Ha. That's a shame.

More on WorldCom:
WorldCom CEO John Sidgmore, shown June 14, 2002 in Clinton, Miss. WorldCom Inc. spiraled toward the brink of bankruptcy after the communications giant reported it had disguised $3.8 billion in expenses. "Our senior management team is shocked by these discoveries," said CEO John Sidgmore, who was appointed in April to replace Bernard Ebbers amid questions about the company's growth and finances.

Mr. Sidgmore was a generous donor to Dem causes, according to the FEC - a total of $24,000 to the DNC, Leahy, Kerrey, Biden and Gore. This begs the question: what did these WorldCom honchos expect in return from Leahy and Kerrey? Which committees are they on that WorldCom was hoping would come up with favorable legislation?

No, it's not the novels, it's a commentary on the book itself. I couldn't get in to the novels.

Thanks so much for the great scam research. Excellent.

I don't know how to say this, but the stuff I read says,
Get the heck outta the market. Now.

Sharpies may want to short the losers, but for most of us,

let's just go buy a new set of tires for the family sled.

Here's my expert investment advice: buy Wal-Mart and Anheuser Busch. If the economy tanks, people will be able to afford to shop only at WM, and they'll drown their financial sorrows in a frosty cold Bud.
