Regardless of why the war started, or who won, the bravery of the soldiers, both blue and grey, white and black was beyond comprehension.

To stand 5 feet apart, muskets blasting at each other took some mighty brave men. I can't imagine the amount of courage it took.

For that matter, in the dark ages, to stand belly to belly, hacking away at each other with 20 lb swords makes modern warfare pale.

Not taking anything from our soldiers today, but those some very brave men.

One 3 day battle in the civil war (Gettysburg, I think), in one day 50,000 men were killed or wounded. That figure comes close to the entire loss of our soldiers in Vietnam.

I watched the entire series, just shaking my head at the magnitude of it.

Because the South had a hissy fit because an election didn't go as they liked. And then they started a war over it by shooting first.

In other words they acted like Democrats or spoiled children. Lincoln had not done one damn thing to them at that point. If you start a war don't whine when the other guy counterattacks and cleans your clock.

I know there were many factors that lead up to the war, so save your angry insults. That the south fired first is undisputed. And I am sick of hearing about it. Get over it.

"To my knowledge no one in the Confederacy sought to take control of the government of the United States."

Actually, they did many times. I'll provide one example and let others here add to the list.

Late in the war, Confederate General Jubal Early assaulted the outskirts of Washington DC in an attempt to take the city and the seat of the Union government. He was fought to a standstill at the battle of Monocacy by Union General Lew Wallace, who later wrote the novel Ben Hur. Add to this at least two excursions into northern territory by R. E. Lee, Antietam and Gettysburg.

OK scholars, anymore?

Actually, the number of casualties at Gettysburg was over double that amount.

God condemns many things more harshly than slavery. In fact, God gives instructions on how to treat slaves. He never says to get rid of them.

If you are using a Bible as a guide for morality, you won't find God calling slavery immoral. Undesirable for oneself or one's country, yes. Immoral, no.

I said "In one day". Not the whole battle.

Had it not been for the issue of slavery the Federals would've had very little moral ground on which to stand in prohibiting secession. Because of this peculiar institution and preservation of it was the actual reason that secession was sought, meant that those seeking to save the Union were left with the moral higher ground.

The term "Civil War" is defined as two (or more) factions within the same country fighting for control of the government.

That is NOT what happend here!

Yes....

I can see why you are an Aggie....

Slavery had VERY little to do with it. Especially in Texas.

Lincoln was a sick man. He was obsessed with saving the Union--at whatever cost.

Dead is good for him, dead works. I will not debate that fact. You may want to. But I will not. Sorry lips zipped, I am sorry but I was not invited to the funeral, did not see the body but if he is dead, that is ok. I will not miss a moments sleep worrying about him.. IF you are, Sorry, you need a life, try DU.

Wow.

God allowed Israelite polygamy, but he frowned on it. Or has that page been removed from the loose leaf bible?
