Go to www.download.com and download pop-up stopper. There's a free version and it eliminates 98% of pop-up ads.

Zonealarm pro is excellent and they have a free 60 day trial. Get the pro version not the basic one.

I started using Mozilla (
http://www.mozilla.org) a few months ago and haven't had any popup woes since. It lets me selectively kill popups, cookes, images from selected servers (right click on an add banner and select "Block images from this server" - way cool), etc. Surfing the 'Net is fun again.

I can't stand those pop-up ads. My husband says it's like having to swat misquitos. The worst one for me is that Classmates.com. I swear that one seems to follow me around!!

POP-UPS are you pleaged by them? "Pleaged": The love/hate relationship that is "pleased" and "plagued," both at the same time. :-)

When I was a younger man, I had pop-ups all the time. My wife claimed they were annoying....
To: jas3
I tried it and a bunch of others to no avail, Zonealarm has stopped all of the popups.

you probably have some spyware that installed itself on your computer. Get zonealarm and run i, and when it asks if you want to let each program access the net, don't give permission unless you know what that program is.

download PopUp Killer
I have it, very good.

This all started when I it seem I got a message the XP had a updated pact and than the nightmare started! I did uninstall it. I deleted cookies, etc. did the add & removed all that I could.
But these unwanted squatters have decided to stay! its the same gang over and over along with the pop-up CNN.com who is trying to get me buy and won't let me rid this site.

Anotehr suggetion, switch to Mozilla, it has better security than Microsoft Explorer. I have been using it a few days now and really like it, a lot.

If you are getting pop-ups while browsing here on Freerepublic,
you might have spy-ware or a trojan horse on your system opening popup ads.
Spy-ware is a program that is installed on your computer sometimes without your permission or knowledge. It usually comes bundled with free programs, but can be picked up from some websites.
I use the "ad-aware" utility found at this site.
http://www.lsfileserv.com/index.html
It will scan your system for spyware and give you the option of removing it automatically.
also, the popup stopper programs mentioned above seem to help and a firewall like zone alarm is a must for security.

That sounds like some of the ads that I have seen. They are meant to look like a legitimate Windows warning messages in order to trick people into clicking on them.
I don't know how much computer experience that you have, so I will just tell you what I did to overcome the popup ads and security issues online. I'll try to explain it in terms that I would have understood when I was just starting. I don't mean to offend.
I would start out by downloading and using the ad-aware program that I mentioned above... it's free and it has worked good for me.
The next thing is a good firewall.
A firewall is a program that blocks un-authorized internet traffic into and out from your computer. That means that you will have to spend a little bit of time configuring the firewall to let it know which programs you want to allow to make a connection.
I use the free version of zone alarm found at this site.
http://www.zonelabs.com
It is very easy to configure and use and it works well.
To configure it, you just use your computer as you normally would. As each of your programs goes to use the internet, a message box will appear (yes, another popup :-D) asking if you want to allow a connection. You can then assign or deny permission.
Now the popups.
I use a free program called the Proxomitron.
http://www.proxomitron.org/download.html
The proxomitron takes a little bit of work to get running,
you have to configure your browser to use a proxy.
There is a readme file that comes with it that has good instructions on how to do that.
I see that they have a version that comes with an installer.
Maybe it helps make the adjustments to the browser.
Once I got it running, I have not had a single popup ad. It still allows links to open in a new window on FR though.
It also blocks a lot of banner ads on web pages.
