Am Looking for a Spam Stopper -- Recommendations Pleasd!!
04.28.03 | mlmr

I have a mailbox full of spam. I didm't know how badly people want to sell me penis enlargment tool and cheap drugs, gambling. I am also supposed to be overweight and constantly looking for a hot date. Spammers also want me to see things that could be... well... overwhelming.

Sometimes the preview pictures curl my hair as I scramble to delete before the children run into the room.

I have an internet business and do get emails from unknown senders. But the email spam is mixed in. I have three mailboxes that sort into five on my computer. My former consultant suggesed that I read the Feb issue of PC magazine but I am not sure that the items that are recommended will help. I don't want to lose my customer's email.

Have any of you used anti spam software and what would you recommend??

Where can you find your pop3 server names and incoming email info that you need to set up the mailwasher?

Ask your ISP, or check how you have your current e-mail program set up.

If you've already sent and received e-mail through your e-mail program, that information (usually POP3 for incoming mail, and SMTP for outgoing) is in your e-mail program configuration. Copy it down and enter it in Mailwasher.

Sometimes it's a PITB to remember to press the CTRL key for windows I want to popup

Just enable the little "bzzzzt" alarm sound in preferences and it will give you an audio alert when a popup tries to open. It's worked so well for me that like Pavlov's dog, when I hear the "bzzzzt" I now automatically reach for the CTRL key.

"What about the poor folks you send the cards to? I've asked everyone I know to PLEASE stop putting my email address into anything on the net. "

Those poor folks expect me to do it and if I don't I get in trouble with them. It happened to me once and once was enough.

You probably do not remember but a while back you recommended mailwasher and put a list together of your blocked addresses. I just purchased the pro version today and I cannot see where to put that list in, there is just a one line place...is there another place to import the list?

Copy the list I posted and paste it into a plain text file.

Name the text file "blacklist.txt" and store it in your "c:\windows\application data\mailwasher" folder.

Start Mailwasher Pro and under the VIEW option choose "filter sidebar".

Click on the BLACKLIST tab in the filter sidebar.

Click on "options" and browse to find the "c:\windows\application data\mailwasher\blacklist.txt" file you created earlier.

There you go!

Glad you like it and that it works for you. I think it's fantastic. It's cut down a flood of SPAM to just a mere trickle. The more addresses you bounce and add to the blacklist, the better the program gets. After a while, try the following: And after, say, a year of use, you can further tweak the program so that it just automatically bounces known SPAM without it ever showing up in your inbox.

One more question, I work on my outlook express answering my emails. Is there a way that I could keep it open for my work but have it not accept mail so it can go to an open Mailwssher? Then I could just send all my emails at the end of the session after I have vetted mailwasher. I have to go to the children, I will check here in the morning.

Best

One other tip:

Under VIEW > FILTER SIDEBAR > BLACKLIST/FRIENDS, UNcheck "Expire unused e-mail" and "Expire unused wildcard" options

I don't use Outlook Express, so I have no idea about that program.

There is something else besides outlook express? Do you have a Mac?

No, I use a PC, but there are lots of other mail programs out there.

I use Eudora for my e-mail program.

Outlook Express probably has an "auto-check for e-mail every x minutes" feature that you can turn off. Then just have MAILWASHER auto-check for e-mail every 3 minutes or so.

You know I just figured that one out for myself. I had it checking every minute and booped it up to 30 minutes so I have time to deal with the spam caught by Mailwasher. The more I use this program the more I like it. I had multiple viruses last week and have just gotten things back in shape. When I loaded my email I had 1100 pieces of trash mail interspersed among my web site mail. So You can see why I am so thrilled.

I didn't know that there were other mail handlers except for AOL

You may already have already noticed that MailWasher can detect certain types of viral attachments to e-mail and will warn you about them before you open the message.

I have. This may sound odd, but even though I didn't have the money I had to buy this program...and I am so glad I did. The items that were coming in unfiltered were so...difficult. I didn't even realize that they were costing me emotionally until mailwasher stopped them. Since I am on the computer a lot this is really freeing. Thank you for your help. It really made a difference to me.
