A growing number of experts argue that many companies blaming artificial intelligence for job cuts are masking more familiar financial and strategic pressures. The good news for employees worried about the countless predictions of a looming job apocalypse from artificial intelligence (AI) taking work away from humans has not been borne out—at least not yet. However, that hasn’t prevented an increasing number of companies from citing productivity gains made by using those task automating apps as the reason for thousands of recent layoffs they’ve made. But now, a growing chorus of critics have begun denouncing most of those staff reductions...

Nobody really budgets for a financial car crash in April. But that’s exactly what millions of Americans are dealing with this year. Instead of the refund they were counting on to finally pay off Christmas gifts or fund a summer trip, tax season 2026 is handing them a bill. And for a lot of people, it’s not a small one. It’s the kind of bill that makes you want to throw your laptop out a window. The reasons aren’t actually that complicated – the government practically set a trap for anyone with a side hustle. Between confusing tax law changes,...

In an arid valley near the village of Kourtimale in southern Djibouti, a tattered chain link fence marks the boundaries of what was once Abdi Guelleh's farm. Within it, there's not a speck of greenery in sight. Broken lengths of irrigation piping lie scattered in the dust. A derelict weather station stands in a corner amid a tangle of cables. Here and there, taps that haven't seen water in years protrude from the earth. There's little to hint at the fact that this lifeless 2.5-acre plot was once meant to be one tiny brick in one of the world's most...

I built http://CourtWatch.us — a free public database for American citizens who deserve safer communities. You can track which judges released defendants who then got rearrested, skipped court, or violated their release conditions. All public records. All free. I started with Orange County FL and will be expanding to all 67 Florida counties and eventually every state in the country. This first batch of info is from 2024 and since public reports are released in March/April for the previous year, data is behind. But I wanted to see if this is plausible. After adding 2024,I'll add 2025 and then figure...

"You are the heirs of this land's patriotic and honorable commanders — from Aryobarzan, Bahram Chobin, and Surena, to Babak Khorramdin, Yaqub Laith, and Maziar, to Jahanbani, Khosrowdad, and Rahimi. How can you remain silent and inactive in the face of foreign criminal agents affiliated with the Islamic Republic parading and boasting in Iran's streets — from Hashd al-Shaabi and Lebanese Hezbollah to Afghan and Pakistani terrorists? The Islamic Republic and its terrorist, repressive IRGC have, before your very eyes, slaughtered tens of thousands of the purest and bravest children of this country, and each day send more to their...

Yenny/El Ateneo, Argentina’s oldest and largest bookstore chain, publishes weekly charts of the top 10 bestselling books in their retail stores across the country. The Spanish edition of Letters for Life, a new book on the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Torah-based advice for emotional wellbeing, surprised the country’s publishing wizards and emerged as #5 on the list. As a result, the book is now being sold in airports and malls across Argentina. The book’s popularity follows the increased interest in the Lubavitcher Rebbe caused by Argentina’s philo-Semite president Javier Milei. Milei has visited the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Ohel several times on his trips...

…. In Timisoara, a small protest against the eviction of a dissident Hungarian pastor from his church-owned flat quickly escalated into a huge anti-government demonstration. Ceaușescu allowed the police, the armed forces and the Securitate to open fire on the crowds and many men, women and children were killed or injured. When dissenting voices began to be heard across the country about the Timisoara massacre and who was ultimately to blame for it, Ceaușescu …held an open-air meeting in Bucharest three days after the massacre, blaming anti-Romanian troublemakers for the uprising. The crowd was having none of it, and what...

Despite ongoing conflicts, Israelis continue to report high levels of happiness. The annual World Happiness Report has once again been released, placing Israel in a respectable eighth place, with most citizens reporting that they are happy living in the country. The index is published each year by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford. According to the latest rankings, Scandinavian countries occupy the top spots. Residents of Finland are the happiest in the world, followed by those in Iceland. Denmark ranks third. Letter Concerning Toleration by John Locke was originally published in 1689. Its initial publication was in Latin, though it was immediately translated into other languages. In this "letter" addressed to an anonymous "Honored Sir" (actually Locke's close friend Philip von Limborch, who published it without Locke's knowledge) Locke argues for a new understanding of the relationship between religion and government. One of the founders of Empiricism, Locke develops a philosophy that is contrary to the one expressed by Thomas Hobbes in Leviathan, primarily because it supports toleration for various Christian denominations. Locke's work appeared amidst a fear that Catholicism might...

A cool, refreshing pint of Guinness is a traditional and delicious way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. But coaxing out the perfect cascade of lively bubbles and a thick, creamy head is an art that puts even the best bartenders to the test. Now, scientists have revealed the exact method for pouring the perfect pint of stout. And they agree that the famous 'two–stage pour' is far more than just a marketing gimmick. However, experts say there is no magical perfect time to let your pint rest between pours, with exact timing coming down to the sharp eye of an...

Whoever made that decision should be in jail." .....

Two secret battlefield letters written by George Washington during one of the toughest winters of the Revolutionary War have recently surfaced and are now up for sale — just in time for America’s 250th birthday celebration this July 4. Four years into the American colonist’s bloody struggle to break free from British rule, Gen. Washington, from his headquarters in Morristown, NJ penned the letters revealing how the Continental Army tried to monitor loyalist activity and British troop movements across the Hudson River during the winter of 1779 to 1780. Those messages, carefully preserved by descendants of Revolutionary War soldiers, are...

Today I am happy to announce the release of the very short audio for Thomas Jefferson's interesting letter "A Dialog between the Head and Heart", which reaches just past 30 minutes long. Yes, it is a very short recording, but this one is a little different than most others I work on. This recording is a compilation; that is, there are three voices present that are seemingly talking to each other in a way. One of the recordings in this I recorded. This does not signal my triumphant return to the microphone though. I wish. I still have a very...

The war began March 19, 2003, with an overwhelming show of American military might, described by the unforgettable phrase “shock and awe.” Within weeks, the United States achieved the primary objective of Operation Iraqi Freedom, as the military operation was called, ousting the regime of dictator Saddam Hussein. Yet the military campaign that began so auspiciously ended up deeply dividing Americans and alienating key U.S. allies. As Americans looked back on the war four years ago, 62% said it was not worth fighting. … In a pivotal moment in the Iraq debate, Powell presented what he described as “facts and...
