I believe the rule was that if you had one great grand parent who you could prove was British or Irish you could get one of those passports. Englishmen moved in and out of the area so most of the English speaking population could do this if the wished. Those of Dutch, Portuguese, and other European ancestry could not leave with only a South African passport as no one would take them.

I was wondering about the US. Why aren't people (from anyplace) allowed in if they are about to be murdered for political reasons in their own country? What are the US rules for getting political asylum?
