Bush Administration Expresses Confidence in Annan
Netscape News ^ | 12.09.04

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The Bush administration has confidence in U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and is not calling for his resignation, U.S. Ambassador John Danforth said on Thursday.

Several Republican congressmen have called for Annan's resignation, accusing him of presiding over corruption in the U.N. oil-for-food program for Iraq, administered by the United Nations but supervised by the 15-nation Security Council.

But Danforth said he was representing the opinion of the White House and the State Department in supporting Annan.

"We are expressing confidence in the secretary-general and his continuing in office," Danforth told reporters.

"No one to my knowledge has cast doubt on the personal integrity of the secretary-general. No one," Danforth said. "We have worked well with the secretary general. We anticipate working with him in the future."

Is this an display of us taking the position that using a corrupt weak leader is better than the alternative, someone new.

You think they may know something we don't? Like maybe it is inevitable? Or maybe they had rather have Annan than Clinton?

The expression of confidence often comes shortly before the resignation.

i guess the president couldnt care less about what the people who voted for him want. he is on some kind of psycho agenda that doesnt make sense and is putting the republican party in a bad position.

i hope next election i can vote for the constitution party and the republicans dont get 2%.

I agree.......I"m one of those who thinks he should stay for now and let the sh** pile up higher. Right now we all believe he had his hand in it but there is alot of circumstantial evidence (so far) pointing to him.....let's let the investigation continue until the proof is unrefutable and then it will be even more embarrassing for him when even his "buddies" have no recourse but to hang him as well........

Actually Islam itself is a religion of peace, if you study it. Evil interpretations have made many religions of peace into genocidal wars...even Christianity. Read about the crusades.

Jay, I agree see my post just before yours........i'm a solid Repub but sometimes people her go nuts to early. Take Rove's approach; be systematic, follow the leads and jump in for the kill at the right time....we shouldn't go overboard so quickly and too early......in good time the facts will fall in our favor and then we can pounce....Chill everyone

I have no confidence in Annan.

But, I have no confidence in his successor either.

Reminds me of Rather.

If you remove the FACE, you are still left with the corrupt body that produced it. While justified in calling for the resignation of the Face, will it's removal allow the body to regain credibility?

The U.N. itself is the real enemy so the question remains. Which well harm the U.N. more? Annan's resignation or Annan's continued period of service as the FACE?

Some things you have to say. You know that. To send Danforth (who i thought was quitting) out there to say that the administration "doesn't" have "no confidence" in Kofi an'Hans just means that they aren't ready to hound him out of office yet. Norm Coleman is doing a pretty good job of co-opting a left-wing tactic by making the charge and repeating it until it couldn't be ignored any longer and now more and more people are saying it. Like the Swift Boat Vets for Truth, the President doesn't NEED to challenge Kofi on this any more than he needed to challenge sKerry on Vietnam. He has surrogates, and that's a sign of a strong president.

People forget but Bush has coat-tails. A lot of congressmen owe him their jobs, and his power will not dissipate like other presidents because presumably he'll be able to sweep in republicans for the next two cycles before retiring to Kennebunkport... ooops, I meant Crawford.

Exactly, I agree with you.

Although, I would like to know if Danforth was standing under a banner that read barf alert at the time he spoke.

Barf! What is Bush thinking? This guy is more corrupt then the heads of ENRON--and they were ousted!

On 2nd thought, leave him in there. By leaving him in place, it further proves the point that the UN is a corrupt organization. A group that should not be taken seriously and one that I hope the next President will remove America from!

My advice, let Annan stay and let the US get out.

Clueless newbie, your dreams/wishes will nevercome true and you you really should wait and see what this all actually is.Danforth made a statement;the president didn't.

And since you think (and I use that word loosely)that "the president couldn't care less about what the people who voted for him want.he(sic) is on some psycho agenda (sic) that doesn't make sense and is putting the republican (sic)party in a bad position." it is you who are on a "psycho agenda (sic)and on the wrong forum. it is a lot more than this that has me very dissatisfied with bush. the guy isnt a conservative. what good are his tax cuts if he cant cut any spending? he kept mentioning the "no child left behind" act during the campaign as if that was some great accomplishment. it was pathetic. he is wasting our money and soldiers in iraq. he isnt controlling the border. he isnt standing up against the UN. i dont want a leader that takes one of the major issues of importance to people that voted for him (being anti-UN) and is afraid to be strong in his convictions. i dont know what bush's agenda is but i think its clear he isnt only focusing on what americans want.

you are clueless. what kind of impact is it going to be on the republican party when we wake up and realize we just spent hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of american lives in order to fail in building a democracy in a nation of terrorists. you know deep down it isnt going to succeed. just think of what we will have to deal with in the future instead of blindly going along with what bush says.

Hmmm, Americans show disdain for Annan. Annan gets a standing ovation addressing the Security Council. What reason on God's green Earth would the Admin have for to "support" Annan?
BTW, in what hallway will the Constitution Party be holding their next convention?

I do not think "deep down" that Iraq is going to fail. I actually believe deep down that it will be a major success and that history will remember the endeavour as one of the most noble acts in our nation's history.

I realize that it is easy to sometimes get down about the war. And I don't agree with Bush alot of the time, but we have to remain positive. If we don't believe we can, then we never will!

Keep the faith my friend. Iraq will work out, and it will transform the Middle East into something better than the terrorist swamp that it currently is identified as.

How much,in today's dollars, did it cost us to set up Germany and Japan after WW II? How many of our men died in WW II? How long did it take for us to put down the WOLF PACK?

And BTW...your crystal ball is broken. You have less than no idea what I think or "feel deep down". Projection is an easily treated mental disease...get help.

im not sure if im in the right forum. im a conservative. i dont like to see my tax dollars being spent one muslims in the hopes that democracy will save the world. im not interested in taking on the burden of saving the world and other noble efforts. lets leave that to the corrupt losers at the UN.

I had thought 5hat Bush would be different during term two. I guess not. Sadly, he still believes he should not treat the left as foes to be vanquished, but rather win over or appease.

Disappointing.
