Winner spoke to Beliefnet about everything from why masturbation is a "separation from reality" to how she and her now-husband reined in their sexual impulses while they were dating.

Apparently he was better than she about reining in those nasty sexual impulses--she admits later in the article that only "he was the virgin" on the wedding night. Strange? To me it is as testosterone always trumps estrogen in the desire department...

The catch phrase of 'just say no' places too much burden on our will and doesn’t acknowledge the crucial place of God's activity in our faithful living.

Excellent wisdom!

"Sex and the Unmarried Christian"

I just wish that this extremely conservative agnostic (yes they are compatible Dagnabit!) married guy could get some. In case Mrs. Exile is reading this, just kidding hon, what's for dinner?

Great post.

Cosmopolitan and FHM are definitely NOT the best sources for healthy married sex.

Thank you.

The Bible doesn’t have anything to say about masturbation.

Huh?? What about Genesis 38: 8-10?

38 8: Juda, therefore, said to Onan his son: Go in to thy brother's wife and marry her, that thou mayst raise seed to thy brother.
38 9: He knowing that the children should not be his, when he went in to his brother's wife, he spilled his seed upon the ground, lest children should be born in his brother's name.
38 10: And therefore the Lord slew him, because he did a detestable thing

Well, if God killed everyone who masturbates, there wouldn't be anyone left.

Maybe not so strange. She was not always a Christian and perhaps didn't hold the same views about sex and marriage before she converted.

Lauren F. Winner started a lot of conversations when she published her 2003 memoir, "Girl Meets God," about her journey from Orthodox Judaism to evangelical Christianity

Uh, God slew him because at the time his duty was to continue the family line in the place of his brother.

He shirked his duties and this was detestable.

What about Genesis 38: 8-10?

That was a severe penalty for early withdrawal.

More seriously there is a question of whether the penalty was for the act in general or because the act was in defiance of the command for Onan to "keep his brother's name alive" with his brother's widow.

Also, that has nothing to do with female masturbation, as it refers to "spilling of seed."

when he went in to his brother's wife, he spilled his seed upon the ground,

That is coitus interruptus not masturbation.

What about Genesis 38: 8-10?

Doesn't have anything to do with masturbation. It has to do with Onan disobeying God's command.

<

Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." 9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also.

Again, the passage says NOTHING about masturbation.

I think that's about something other than masturbation which is depicted in most every porno.

While Onanism has become a synonym for masturbation, read the passages again. It could just as easily be that Onan was using the withdrawal method, a very risky mode of birth control but nevertheless a reasonable interpretation based on the description in the passages.

Well, that's certainly one interpretation of the passage. However, others disagree.
