Alabama governor calls for Aruba boycott

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama Gov. Bob Riley called for a travel boycott of Aruba on Tuesday until authorities on the Dutch Caribbean island cooperate more fully with the family of a Mountain Brook teenager who has been missing since a graduation trip in May.

Riley asked the governors of the other 49 states to join him in urging a boycott of Aruba on behalf of the family of Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old Mountain Brook High graduate last seen on the island May 30.

Her mother, Beth Holloway-Twitty, joined Riley at the Alabama Capitol for the boycott announcement. She contends Aruban authorities have failed to adequately investigate the possible murder of her daughter, who was with a teenager, Dutch national Joran van der Sloot, and Surinamese brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe on the night she disappeared.

They were held for a time and released.

Oh Chena... you really see the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun.

If you ever take pics, please post them and try to remember to ping me.

Was that a corrupt investigation?
Were the parents asked how much money they had before taking a complaint from them?
Was evidence destroyed by the investigators?
Were the parents accused of a hoax for insurance money?

Not even a close comparison if you've been paying attention to Natalee's case.

I'll sure do that, onyx. My husband bought me a new digital camera a few months ago and I can't wait to try it on the "lights". I wish everyone in the whole, wide world could experience the Northern Lights from my home. We don't have city lights, no street lights to lessen their brilliance. And when they get to dancing....oh my, it truly is hypnotic.

I sure do enjoy your posts as well, onyx. Be well, and I'll say hi to the "lights" and the "midnight sun" for ya. :)

We get Northern Lights, but not quite as spectacular as those in Alaska. :)

I'll sure try, BSF! It was -45 on Saturday morning but it has warmed up a bit since then. It was only -28 this morning. We're up to a balmy -15 right now thanks to clouds rolling in. The snow is falling and all it's a beautiful night. My pet "flying squirrel" is at the feeder right now so I'd better go say hi to him...or her....he/she won't tell. LOL

Be well, be happy, and I'll see ya next time. :)

It gets cold like that here, but those temperatures don't arrive until January. LOL

Today there was no wind, and an all day snow. Reminded me of a shaken snowglobe. The snow was coming down straight and slow. :)

I wonder if Montana has an "aurora website"? Alaska has an Auroral site that predicts auroral activity. I was born and raised in Wisconsin and I do remember watching the northern lights. They weren't nearly as spectacular nor as active as they are in Alaska, but we sure did enjoy them nonetheless.

I've been to Montana, and it is a beautiful state. A bit crowded these days for me, but then again, that's only from an Alaskan perspective. LOL I'm a long way from nowhere, and it's a great place to be.

I "hate" that I and so many of us are likely right about what happened. My daughter lives on Grand Cayman Island, and I know that once a boat goes past the barrier reef, it's impossible to ever find a body. This is a tragic situation, but one the Aruba investigators riuned by jailing those two innocent black guards solely on the accusations of the three jerks who were last seen with her.

In this country, "racism" would have been screamed right away, and rightly so --- but sadly, not in Aruba. A totally sick and sad situation.

I wouldn't mind it one little bit if we didn't get these temps until January. But I really shouldn't, and won't, complain. We've had a few years of milder winters. I can remember when it was 50 below at Halloween and the boys couldn't take out the snowmachines to go trick-or-treating.

Some call me crazy, but I LOVE snow. I know I have to shovel it, plow it, and make snowballs out of it (har har), but it's just so beautiful. I'm a 4-seasons kind of gal. I love each and every season for the change and beauty it brings. I just can't imagine living where the seasons didn't change.

Well, I'm rambling on now when I really should be stoking the fire and tending my doggies. Rest well, BSF. :)

Not that I am aware of. One of the state universities might have such a place, but I haven't looked. I do know that NASA has a polar orbiting satellite that monitors auroral activity and it's pretty accurate. It's pretty surprising the number of times auroral activity occurs year around.

I've been to Montana, and it is a beautiful state. A bit crowded these days for me, but then again, that's only from an Alaskan perspective.

I live in probably the most remote part of this state as one can get. LOL

I'm a long way from nowhere, and it's a great place to be.

Same here, but a 131 mile journey to Wal-Mart is worth it sometimes. LOL

"The Governor has gone overboard..."

I can understand why some would see it that way. Some may look upon this case as a private matter which should not receive the help of any American politician. Yet these people want to be elected to serve their constituency. We sure gripe enough when they appear not to be representing what we want.

I see Gov. Riley as acting like a man--- one who is in a position to put needed pressure on the Dutch to do what they have not yet been willing to do. Their brand of investigation, at least in this case, has shown itself to be a farce.

This stalling has gone on for many months. Wouldn't you agree that the Aruban police/detectives should have gathered all possible evidence immediately? If that is their usual modus operandi, why did they not follow through when an American teenager was nowhere to be found? They learned that three boys from Aruba were last with her. One of them had a father in influential circles.

With that knowledge and what else we've picked up over these months, how can we not suspect a "good old boy" coverup?

Maybe the Alabama governor is convinced that this is what is going on in Aruba. And maybe he can't bring himself to tolerate it.

Well, isn't that something. We both appreciate and enjoy the wilderness. We're 200 miles from Fairbanks, about a 4 hour drive because of our road conditions. We go to "town" about 4 or 5 times a year. Sometimes "town" is Fairbanks and sometimes it's Anchorage. Anchorage is a long ways away....a 6 hour drive. But like you said, a trip to Wal-Mart is sure worth it sometimes. LOL

There have been winters where Alaska (particularly along the southern coast) was warmer all winter than it was here for the same time period. LOL

I don't mind winter, it's the shoveling for 6 months out of the year sometimes that I gripe about. LOL

I don't get "cabin fever", as long as I have a few extra loaves of bread and a couple jugs of 2% Milk in the freezer to keep fresh on hand and the extra supply of homegrown beef in the deep freeze and ample supply of canned goods on the shelf in the storage room, the satellite TV, and computer, I'm happy. It's those days when the snow is piled high, the 12 mile trek to the store when I start to run out of food I dread. LMAO.

Well, I'm rambling on now when I really should be stoking the fire and tending my doggies. Rest well, BSF. :)

You too early bird. :)

For the most part, I'm on the same page with you. I have no clue as to her having street smarts. Maybe you observe that most high school seniors are not naive.

Last I heard, Beth Twitty believes her daughter thought she was getting into a taxi. Sounds like you don't buy it.

Maybe we'll never know. And, just maybe, the other grads on the trip know more than they were willing to say.

I quickly add that those interviewed may well have given honest accounts of what they know.

Oh, I may be wrong about a boycott, but I sincerely believe that the Aruban police/justice system, by their blatant (and MAYBE deliberate) mishandling of this case, can place the possible results on their OWN shoulders, not the U.S.

Do you believe that Joran and Paulos and the Kalpoe brothers are innocent of any crime?

"...all you have taight them and still be victimized."

We live in a scary world. Was it always this bad? My life experiences tell me this kidnapping and murder of children continues to escalate. Why? My first thought on that is the ongoing crusade to destroy traditionally-held values. How that has lead to evil acts against little children, I don't know. Something for me to research.

Montana. Big Sky Country. We tripped thru the U.S. by car twice. The Big Horn and Beartooth Mtns. Yellowstone. Glacier National Park.

Unforgettable. Our videos bring it all back, but nothing like experiencing any place first hand.

I am ever grateful for the wonderful experience.

That the Aruban police did a pathetic job of going after evidence has become obvious to most of us. And I agree with you...whatever occurred that early morning, this does not excuse the Aruban authorities of sloppy investigation.
