Alabama governor calls for Aruba boycott

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama Gov. Bob Riley called for a travel boycott of Aruba on Tuesday until authorities on the Dutch Caribbean island cooperate more fully with the family of a Mountain Brook teenager who has been missing since a graduation trip in May.

Riley asked the governors of the other 49 states to join him in urging a boycott of Aruba on behalf of the family of Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old Mountain Brook High graduate last seen on the island May 30.

Her mother, Beth Holloway-Twitty, joined Riley at the Alabama Capitol for the boycott announcement. She contends Aruban authorities have failed to adequately investigate the possible murder of her daughter, who was with a teenager, Dutch national Joran van der Sloot, and Surinamese brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe on the night she disappeared.

They were held for a time and released.

"...the jaundiced viewpoint of Beth."

Do you know for a fact that Beth's viewpoint is skewed? Are you referring to a particular viewpoint she has put forth? What is it?

How can Fox, etc. air both sides of the story when Aruba keeps a tight rein on information? I suggest you do agree that the Aruban authorities handled this case badly from the outset. They did not undertake the necessary investigations which may have led quickly to the truth of what occurred. To make a long story short, Paulos van der Sloot had convenient connections. He and his wife gave Joran, an underaged kid, a pass to attend nightclubs and casinos. Top that off with the boy having his own apartment on their property.

If he never got into trouble despite all the freedom they gave him, we wouldn't be discussing it here.

He was not their innocent young son, despite what his mother chooses to hang on to.

If I am way off the track in believing a pretty clear picture has been presented to Americans, I will admit my naivete to you. Please remind me.

I want the Aruban/Dutch authorities to do a real and honest investigative of this case, with no protections for anyone. Will they? We wait to see. Through the last five months they have avoided what most of us see as a thorough, honest, sincere effort to get to the truth.

and my brother and my sister and their families both live in Mt Brook (or N. Shelby county, which is the same thing).

Actually, Mt. Brook is in Jefferson County. N. Shelby county is more well known as home to the community of Hoover. It's very different. Hoover has a high population of Mexicans and section 8 housing.

Not so Mt. Brook.

Please take that bee out of your backside about me. I am only one person, post under one screen name. I have posted for a couple of years under a different name, but I felt it was too close to my real name and I started thinking about all the nuts out there who might get upset about a comment, so I opted for a little more anonymity. Looks like that was a good idea!

After trying to break these kids for many many weeks, the authorities concluded they really didn't do it.

Rita Cosby: You know, we talked to the chief. We talked to Chief Dompig a couple days ago on our show. And I asked him—I said, “Do you think that these boys are guilty as hell?” and he said, “Yes.”

He also went a little further and talked about where he thinks the blame lies. Let‘s take a listen to what he had to say.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GEROLD DOMPIG, DEPUTY POLICY CHIEF OF ARUBA: I still believe that these boys have been lying. They‘re still lying. And everybody knows that by now. So there‘s no doubt in my mind that they know something, they are guilty of something.

leaf, your're right. No one knows. No one knows for sure that Natalee Holloway is alive or dead. Do you not question why these three young men, the last known to be with her, have told numerous lies? Or why, as I recall, because of one or all of them, the two black security guards were locked up? It turns out they were never involved with Natalee's disappearance. I question why the home of at least one of the two was completely searched while the home of Paulos van der Sloot was off-limits regarding a search.

If you believe that Joran van der Sloot, the Kalpoe brothers, and Paulos...none of them...know anything about what occurred in the wee hours of that fateful morning, we will have to part company and agree to disagree.

Do you have any hope that Alabama Governor Riley, who said he will contact every other governor (probably has by now) to join him in a travel boycott of Aruba, will force the Aruban authorities to play straight? If he is successful in convincing the Amer. people to avoid Aruba in their vacation plans, let's hope "money talks", or in this case, the lack of money. In my opinion: the Aruban authorities assigned to handle this case have brought this on their "paradise" island. Don't blame the U.S.

What facts? There are none. Dr. Phil is right. She's still alive.

He didn't say they were guilty of killing the girl....just a dumb 17 year old that didn't want his parents to know he was late with some girl. There are no facts....just distortions of what someone said. Makes for good TV but a weak murder case. In this country, you are innocent until proven guilty. She has been kidnapped and removed from the island.

Leaf, it doesn't get any simpler than that. You made a declarative statement and I proved you wrong.

Hopefully the boycott and the case itself will bring on more awareness of safety concerns in planning high school trips.

You sound EXACTLY like that 'ho' Arlene Schippers. You are wasting your time here. We know that Aruba is a corrupt and filthy place, and we do not want our children going there.

Did something recently change regarding this story?

I saw a show last night do a story on this (O'Reilly or Scarborough, I can't recall now), and he sounded like it was recently disclosed that all of Aruba's officials were powerless and being directed by The Hague, and were basically stringing along the family without actually doing anything, at the direction of the Netherlands.

Was this true? It seemed like the basis for the boycott call was that if the police and government were powerless puppets, then don't go there until it becomes safe again.

I should have said "remains". I never said anything about
the Holloways. I merely pointed out that there are unsolved
murders in this country as well. I liked the idea of
boycotting Washington, D. C. (like on April 15th).

Right.....isn't about time they arrest the killer of Chandra Levy. They have found her remains so they know it's a murder. Something doesn't doesn't pass the smell test on this Holloway case. So much misinformation spread and now the politicizing of the case. Cable tv news operations are trying to create ratings out of this story. Sad but true.
