President Bush yesterday said he opposes a civilian project to monitor illegal aliens crossing the border, characterizing them as "vigilantes." He said he would pressure Congress to further loosen immigration law.

what a tool.

"The Minutemen would not be needed if the President and his Attorneys General did not shirk their Constitutional duty to enforce the laws of the land."

That being the case they (the minutemen) are needed more than ever... I for one support their efforts.

The reaction is really funny....

It won't be the last, and is not the first, but it is so predictable and a sign of the things that are yet to come.

As a spectator I find it amusing now, because I am long past angry over the breakdown of the Conservative base...I can't help it........LOL.....:-) 06-08 will be a hoot!...

There he goes again. This marks the SECOND TIME he has used the word "Vigilantes" to describe those brave Minutemen.
His advisors have lost it completely. He would be better off not saying anything.

President Bush, you are either:

1) Getting very bad advise on this issue.
2) Simply mistaken on your own, or,
3) The Washington Times is mischaracterizing what you said.

Either way...the Minutemen are not viglantes. They are working with the Border Patrol and other agencies to help them do an impossible job in an environment where you most definitely are, IMHO, not helping our border situation, our legal immigration efforts, or the security of our southern border and therefore our nation by helping Fox on this issue. Fox is not our friend here, period.

This is where President Bush and I part company. It doesn't mean that I do not support President Bush any less. On immigration, as stock from an immigrant family, I think Bush is flat out wrong.

This is an old article and I believe that positions have been modified based on feedback since it was published. To interpret this article as a representation of the current situation would be, I believe, inaccurate.

Is he trying to make 06 a disaster?

It would seem that way.

"Are we celebrating the Anniversary of one of the President's dumbest comments?"

Haha... almost I guess. Some of our fellow FReepers... the "homers" are getting upset because I posted a year old article. But here we are a year later and nothing has changed. Look at the continued mess just since last year. We have actually had Mexican army on Texas soil fiddling around.

OK, so it's a year old, the point is whether Bush still feels the same way, will he threaten to veto meaningful border/Illegals legislation? Not that he would in an election year.

There is an upcoming pow-wow between Bush & Fox in a few days or weeks, on the Baja Pennisula I think, what will Bush's message be this year?

In light of that, I submit that this is a very timely article. The Sheeple forget all to quickly [if they even knew to begin with]

Ah, where have these people learned that checks and balances are illegal now in America?

Sorry, but virtue is not an absolute in man.

This is an old article

You're right. This is a genuine question for anyone--Has Bush done/said anything differently since this article was published?

The King did like Hessian "minutemen"/mercenaries though. I wonder why no emphasis is made on Fox's usage of pogrom like migrant traders as vigilantism...

On Texas soil!

In Texas, our government/law enforcement is more concerned with arresting people that are drunk in bars rather than curbin' the illegals...

"rest assured they will find a pretext, perhaps in connection with..."

Perhaps in connection with the next terrorist attack which will come from a lack of border enforcement.

Criminal negligence is criminal negligence, I don't care what party you're from.

But here we are a year later and nothing has changed.

The President's 'vigilante' comment is arguably one of the most divisive among Conservatives that he has ever made. I truly believe that it was made out of ignorance and is no longer applicable.

For you to post this article now, to put forth the notion that the President still feels this way, is the height of folly.
