Liberal Democrats love smoking bans.
The Washington Times ^ | 7/24/2006 | Christina Bellantoni

Let there be no doubt left as to why smoking bans are trendy and chic in Democratic Blue States while "flyover country" remains free. God bless the Red States! John Wayne and Gary Cooper can still look down and reminisce about what a great country the USA is. The concept of private property seems to be lost in the liberal nanny states. That's the essence of Communism and Socialism. There is no such thing as private property. Private property only exists where Lenin and Stalin hang out.

Watch your butt (pun intended).

There are a number of anti-smoking fanatics on this site.

I'm on the pro side, even though I wish I could quit. I figure if they come for our cigarettes and we let them, they'll never stop at that. Incrememtalism.

Smoking bans are the current Shangri-La of the nanny state types, left and right.

Don't worry about me. I'm a veteran of the smoking wars.

You can see for yourself here:

http://www.smokinglobby.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1091

The fact that Republicans believe in small government while libs believe in a Utopian state seems to be lost on the general population.

It's a shame. 25% of the population smokes and they don't realize that the douchebag with the D next to his name who they are unwittingly voting for are taking their rights away.

I'm trying to set them straight. I don't harbor delusions of grandeur but if I can convince just 2 (or 150) people to see the truth, I will consider my time online well spent.

Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but a lot of Conservative lawmakers are also jumping on the smoking bandwagon today.

The Republic Governor of New York signed the bill to make all of New York smoke free.  So, its not just the Libs!

Our own lawmakers are turning against us.

39% live in areas limiting smoking

By Wendy Koch, USA TODAY
Six states enacted indoor smoking bans in 2005, more than in any previous year, as public sentiment appears increasingly anti-tobacco.

..

"The social norms are changing. It's no longer OK to blow smoke in someone's face," says Annie Tegen, spokeswoman for Americans For Non-smokers' Rights. "

..

"We're approaching or hitting the tipping point," says Paul Billings, vice president for national policy of the American Lung Association.

..

Philip Morris USA, the nation's largest cigarette company, decided this year to stop opposing smoke-free laws except where the company owns a local business directly affected, spokesman Bill Phelps says.

I take it you are the same SheLion from SmokersClubInternational.

Sure, some Republicans cross party lines. They do it all the time. Guliani, Whitman and Schwarzeneger are all pro-choice. Yesterday, Republicans Lincoln Chafee, Susan Collins, Arlen Specter and Olympia Snowe all voted against the bill that would make it a crime to transport a girl across state lines for an abortion without her parents consent.

But follow the money on tobacco control and it is obvious:

http://tobaccofreeaction.org/contributions/september2005/september2005.pdf

Tobacco contributions to Republicans outnumber contributions to Dems by 5-1.

Also look at the votes:

New Hampshire SB 1177 prohibiting smoking in restaurants, cocktail lounges, and certain enclosed public places.

Republicans voted against the smoking ban 117-47

Democrats voted in favor of the ban 130-47

The bill passed the NH house 177-164

It then went to the NH Senate where it failed 12-11

Republicans voted 12-2 to kill the bill and send it back to committee.

http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/ie/rollcall/rollcallsbyvotedetail.asp?sessionyear=2006&voteno=56&body=S

Democrats supported the smoking ban 9-0.

It shouldn't be surprising. It's small government versus big government.

I don't want to hear about Bloomberg, the poster boy for RINO's or Arkansas Gov. Huckabee, that reformed health zealot who suffered a near death experience at the hands of that global health menace...BACON DOUBLE CHEESEBURGERS AND FRIES.

Ray, the reason for that is the predominantly liberal urban population centers and their nanny state politicians are easy prey for health activists armed with junk science and bogus studies and piles of campaign contribution cash from RWJF.

My sister said that where she works a guy came in looking to give out free samples of tobacco. She was shocked. Not because she is an anti-smoking freak, she doesn't smoke but could care less if others do, she was just surprised that anyone is even allowed to do that now with all the anti-smoking people making everyone's lives miserable.

Of course, they were not allowed to leave free samples for the employees, the Pres. quit smoking about a year ago and now hates anyone who smokes. (I think it is because he really wants to smoke but won't let himself and hates anyone who dares go against the PC crowd).

It is weird though, if you go overseas, smoking is no big deal, anywhere. If you smoke, okay, if you don't, no big deal.

yellowdoghunter, Why would you hunt yellow dogs anyway ???(ha, ha. Once we get to know each other I'll let loose. In the meantime lame humor and small talk will suffice. I'm capable of much better!) I'll assume there is some meaning there...like you love yellow labs who wade into the lake and drag the dead duck back to shore while PETA wackos scream in horror in the background. Then you can cook it while vegetarians scream and howl and hold a candlelight vigil.

Back to the point:

You wrote,

All Republicans or Conservatives who are in on the health fascism kick have something in common...they have all been "victims" of Big Tobacco, Big Beer, or Big Macs. Now they see the light and are determined to lash out and make their former persecutors pay (Philip Morris, Coors Brewing, or McDonalds) now that they have power.

Mike Bloomberg was a a former 2 pack a day smoker. He hates himself for letting RJ Reynolds lure him into a bad habit. Now he's a billionaire and mayor of the biggest city in America...and God damn it they will pay for what they did to him. Mike Huckabee was a "Fat Bastard", KFC finger lickin', McDonalds's fries mouth stuffin', Baskin Robbins eatin' fool. Then he saw God after Chicken McNuggets clogged his arteries and gave him a massive coronary.

When ego and personal feelings get involved it doesn't matter what letter is in front of your name: D, R, FBI, CIA, PhD.

Then you said:

It is weird though, if you go overseas, smoking is no big deal, anywhere. If you smoke, okay, if you don't, no big deal.

yeah. They also don't care if they see a pair of breast on TV. Unlike in America where the mere sight of Janet Jackson's nipple on the Super Bowl halftime show required a Senate Subcommittee investigation.

At what point did the female mammary gland become so disgusting that we have to run in horror when we see it? Oh, we can't let the children see that! My kids were 20 seconds old when they saw their first breast...and they were grateful for it!

Yep and we have our share of anti private property FReepers. We call them smoke gnatzies, they are like gnats buzzing around other people's business and they need to be swatted down.

"The fact that Republicans believe in small government..."

Correction, many "republicans" support government growth as long as it is in the name of their agenda items. Many Repbulicans have endorsed or introduced the bans. BTW, this is not a smoking right or clean air right, it is simply a private property issue.

For a good read, try this article by Walter Williams:

Democrat or Republican, not much difference here. What should be noted is that both seem to feel they aren't held to the laws they pass for us.

Reps. Martin T. Meehan of Massachusetts and Henry A. Waxman of California, both Democrats, sent a letter to Mr. Hastert in June, urging him to prohibit smoking in all House buildings and chastising him for not observing the D.C. ban.

"Instead, the House will continue to expose staff and visitors to secondhand smoke, a known human carcinogen," they wrote.

The term "bitch slap" comes to mind.

Eric, you seem like a good guy with a sense of humor and a guy that is pro-property rights, so here are a few tips:

First of all, when you post a thread use the original title from the source or sooner or later, the mods will jump on you.

Second, instead of posting your own rant, use an excerpt from the original article so people will know what the hell you're talking about.

Other than that, welcome to FR.

Anybody that lets the likes of Marty (I only did it that one time at Salisbury Beach, so why does everybody still call me that) Meehan tell them how to live, deserves exactly what they get.
