Mel Gibson's statement on his DUI arrest
GrandForksHerald.com ^ | 7/29/06

Posted on 07/29/2006 1:51:47 PM PDT by LdSentinal

The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:

"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.

"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.

"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."

Some people refuse to believe any facts that go against their world-view.

Wise words. Thanks for posting them.

Thanks, Petronski. It's in my heart.

Well, in terms of the Jewish aspect of his statement, it falls woefully short IMO.

Well, look at it this way. Suppose you were a white racist and you had an instinctive hatred of black people--I'm not talking about a rationalized hatred, but something that you can't explain; something deep down inside, that originated in your past. Now suppose you're a moral person, and your sense of morality tells you that your racist attitude is wrong, and shouldn't be tolerated. So you train yourself to do the right thing and show tolerance toward blacks, and even develop friendships with them, all the while never allowing your instinctive feelings to overcome your sense of rectitude and justice. Now suppose something happens, and your resistance is down, and your natural inclinations come to the fore, even for the briefest instant. That's what might have happened here--I say might because I don't know the situation well enough to make a positive judgement.

But it seems the top "Breaking News" stories on this forum are always "Sunday Morning Talk Show Thread," "GOTTA SEE THIS" or "Presidential Press Conference LIVE THREAD."

I always suspected he was an anti-Semite. Maybe the people who stuck their heads in the sand for him will admit the truth. Better late than never.

Maybe Peggy Noonan, Linda Chavez, et al. will stop defending him - and Bill O'Reilly and also James Hirsen. this is not a guy to look up to.

And yet, people such as James Hirsen of Newsmax continued to write and shill for Gibson and asked us to ignore his awful comments.

If alcohol merely let out our "true" natures, wouldn't that apply to good things and thoughts and tendencies, as well as bad?

But it doesn't, does it? No one really becomes "even better" when drunk, if they were good and kind when sober.

Laz, you know I'm in the same club...I'll give him a pass for driving while intoxicated, I'll give him a pass for becoming beligerant and acting like an ass when the police tried to take him in...but I will not give him a pass on being a Jew Hater. That's where my compassion stops.

Don't get your hopes up.

Mel has already been forgiven by his fans; he is "troubled" and "needs our pity and prayer".

That's not true.. there are very nice drunks. You've never met someone who was drinking who was really sweet...overly nice. In fact, I dated a guy and it got to the point that (and this was really wrong) I encouraged him to drink becuase he became nicer and more affectionate.

How about sending money to the Jewish victims of Moslem terrorism? That would be a good way to start.

I said nothing about bigotry.
Also, I do not know if he said those things...and do not believe that "Passion of the Christ" says anything bad about the Jews.

Judge not, that ye be not judged.

I stand with you 100% in this regard, Hildy. There is never an excuse for ugly statements that are hateful and painful and blame an entire group of people for the problems of the world. There is no excuse.

And what's the saying - In wine there is truth.

No, sorry. Nice isn't the word. Lubricated and talky, blubbering and nostalgic, like a character out of Russian play or novel, maybe. But haven't meant anyone that drunkeness improves on a consistent basis.

Some of these people grew up believing that Judaism should be held in contempt; that the Jews are no longer God's Chosen People; that the Jews killed Jesus, etc., etc. When the Vatican finally wised up and stopped teaching that stuff, they could not turn on the "off" switch. I think Gibson's dad and Pat Buchanan are in that group. They absorbed that awful preachy screachy anti-Semitism from people like Father Coughlin and it stayed with them.
