Mary Cheney and Partner Are About to Be Moms
Washington Post ^ | December 6, 2006 | Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts

Posted on 12/05/2006 11:04:34 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Mary Cheney, the vice president's openly gay daughter, is pregnant. She and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby, due in late spring, said a source close to the couple.

It's a baby boom for grandparents Dick and Lynne Cheney: Their older daughter, Elizabeth, went on leave as deputy assistant secretary of state before having her fifth child in July. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesman Lea Anne McBride said last night.

Cheney, 37, was a key aide to her father during the 2004 reelection campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL. Poe, 45, a former park ranger, is renovating their Great Falls home.

News of the pregnancy will undoubtedly reignite the debate about gay marriage. During the campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people "ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to" but deferred to the president's policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Cheney herself called the proposed amendment "a gross affront to gays and lesbians everywhere" in her book, "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," which was published in May.

Cheney has described her relationship with Poe -- whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla-- as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family.

This thread is degenerating on both side of the debate so I'll try to keep it sane. A few points. Funny thing, there was a time when being a conservative meant keeping the government OUT of our bedrooms and private lives!

Ditto the argument by the libs on abortion. As far as the two women are concerned, let them go at it all they like in privacy. Once a child comes into it, that (imo) crosses the line.

Now either you agree with me on that or you don't. If you disagree, then no amount of argument can sway you.

If you disagree with Heather having two mommies, then you disagree with the veep on this matter. And being family does NOT give you a pass to effectively endorse something that's wrong.

I'm sick of people who otherwise would be dead against this saying it's ok because it's the Veep's family. I have a lot more respect for someone who just says "I think what they are doing is fine" than I do for someone who says "it's sick, but she's family, what can you do?".

If it's family, then it's even MORE your responsibility to take a stand on it. I.E. you might not really like the idea of smoking pot, but if you see a kid on the street doing it you mightnt get out of your car to stop them. If you see my OWN kid on the street smoking pot, damn it but I'll hold up the traffic for an hour while I lay it on him.

The veep "tacitly" supporting this is the worst solution. If he supports it, then let him say it, if not, then same thing.

That was supposed to be "one pair of every species." Sorry. The mind is faster than the typing fingers.....

Actually it's one pair of every non-Kosher species, and seven pairs of every Kosher species.

That's good for a bar bet, I bet...

Why is it scary? I enjoy Free Republic and have learned a heck of a lot from all the FREEPERS and made friends with quite a few. My family enjoys the learning that they get from it also. I guess if you think enjoying Free Republic and not wanting to be without it is scary...so be it. Call my thinking scary than. No worries.

I'm sick of people who otherwise would be dead against this saying it's ok because it's the Veep's family.

And you know what I'm sick of? I'm sick of people wanting to legislate morality at the national level. I'm sick of pro-marriage Amendments, flag burning Amendments, abortion Amendments, (fill in the blank for the morality you support) Amendments. What do you not understand about this statement?

The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State. The operations of the federal government will be most extensive and important in times of war and danger; those of the State governments, in times of peace and security.--Federalist 45
and
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
which means, to take it back to a Constitutional standpoint, it's none of yours or anyone else's business how someone lives unless you are in a state that has passed legislation specifically prohibiting an act. This goes for abortion, marriage, etc. This is the stance of the Framers of the Constitution. They neither intended nor wanted morality built into the Federal Constitution. So what an elected federal official feels about a personal issue is none of my concern.

The veep "tacitly" supporting this is the worst solution. If he supports it, then let him say it, if not, then same thing.

I don't have to take a stand on it nor will I. And guess what? It's none of your business what Vice President Cheney supports or not. As outlined in the Federal Constitution (and the Federalist Papers which were used to argue support for the document) the Vice President's role is specific and deals with federal issues. He could show up tomorrow wearing a damn dress for all I care (wonder how many here arguing so vehemently against this have some issues they wouldn't want brought out into the open?). As long as he sticks to the issues that are the business of the federal government it just doesn't matter. Ms. Cheney and her partner aren't bothering me and aren't affecting me by their decision. It's called freedom and liberty. They have a right to choose how they live. And unless their respective state outlines rules against such behavior, nothing should be said about it. Leave them alone. They are private citizens who were not elected and should not have to answer to you or any other partisan moral hack

Hey Preach,
I am defending ***anyone*** Gay or Straight, who is serious about doing a really tough job.
I could not care less if the Mom(s) or Dad(s) are related to one of your sacred cattle or not.
Anyone who undertakes to be a parent and love and care for a child is OK in MY book.
If you happen not to agree that is just nifty, peachy keen.

Have a Merry Christmas, and think about what your attitudes would have been like is your were a resident of a shabby town in Judea about 2006 years ago.

We may have serious problems, but the possibility of radical Islam coming to power is not one of them.

Are you willing to bet your children and your country on that? If so, it logically follows that you believe we have no business trying to stop the spread of militant islam.

This is a revolutionary re-definition of "family", at the very least.

On might even say unprecidented. It's going to be an interesting ride.
