Yes, Rudy Giuliani Is a Conservative
City Journal ^ | Jan.25, '07 | Steven Malanga

Personally, I prefer Tancredo although I admire "America's Mayor," and this article sheds some light on Rudy's little known conservative and courageous accomplishments.

Please do not call him a conservative in this forum.

Has Mr. Robinson appointed you hall monitor?

You can't blame conservatives for sticking to their principles just because you have none.

Stupidity is not a principle.

Don't ever assume you know how everyone must vote. Some people vote their conscience. Why can't you leave it at that?

From Captain's Quarters:

Rasmussen's matchups show some interesting figures. They polled all of the major and minor presumed candidates against each other, and the one Republican who wins against them all is Rudy Giuliani.

Romney loses to Obama by 13 points and Hillary by eight; he even loses to Tom Vilsack, although neither of them garner 40% in the poll. Romney still has a lot of time to define himself, of course, but that can't be said of John McCain. He has been in front of a few cameras over the last few years as the leading GOP maverick, at least until Chuck Hagel started speaking up about Iraq. McCain edges Hillary within the margin of error, but loses to John Edwards and Barack Obama by the same margin.

Giuliani, on the other hand, beats everyone -- Hillary, Gore, Edwards, and especially Obama, whom he surpasses by eleven points.

It's still way too early to take this seriously, but it's not completely worthless, either.

Correctamundo! I had my pistol carry permit in NYC throughout the Koch and Dinkins administrations, and re-registered every two years--no problem (for an initial carry in NYC you are personally interviewed by an NYPD sargeant and your prints are sent to the FBI along with other background checks). Then Roody gets in and I lose my permit after 19 years (along with thousands of others without a blemish on their records).

Yeah--he's conservative...and Bill Clinton is an honest and moral man.

Pro-Illegal Immigration

As Tom Bevan of RealClearPolitics has pointed out, Rudy is an adherent of the same approach to illegal immigration that John McCain, Ted Kennedy, George Bush, and Harry Reid have championed:

"While McCain has taken heat for his support of comprehensive immigration reform, Rudy is every bit as pro-immigration as McCain - if not more so. On the O'Reilly Factor last week Giuliani argued for a "practical approach" to immigration and cited his efforts as Mayor of New York City to "regularize" illegal immigrants by providing them with access to city services like public education to "make their lives reasonable." Giuliani did say that "a tremendous amount of money should be put into the physical security" needed to stop the flow of illegal immigrants coming across the border, but his overall position on immigration is essentially indistinguishable from McCain's."

That's bad enough. But, as Michelle Malkin has revealed, under Giuliani, New York was an illegal alien sanctuary and "America's Mayor" actually sued the federal government in an effort to keep New York City employees from having to cooperate with the INS:

"When Congress enacted immigration reform laws that forbade local governments from barring employees from cooperating with the INS, Mayor Rudy Giuliani filed suit against the feds in 1997. He was rebuffed by two lower courts, which ruled that the sanctuary order amounted to special treatment for illegal aliens and were nothing more than an unlawful effort to flaunt federal enforcement efforts against illegal aliens. In January 2000, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal, but Giuliani vowed to ignore the law."

If you agree with the way that Nancy Pelosi and Company deal with illegal immigration, then you'll find the way that Rudy Giuliani tackles the issue to be right down your alley.

If Rudy was really a conservative we wouldn't have to be told.

Stupidity is not a principle.

Belittling the core values of large swaths of the GOP base as stupidity ain't a very bright strategy for winning the White House.

At least Romney realizes the need to build bridges to the right.

The Rudy boosters think they can just insult social and gun-rights conservatives and they'll just meekly fall into line.

Love this one, it will really help him ....(S)

Giuliani's first marriage was to his 2nd Cousin and childhood sweetheart, Regina Peruggi, to whom he was married from 1969 to 1982.

"Some folks find it much easier to throw in the towel. They could care less about conviction. They have no principles to fight for.
It's 01/2006 and they have the white flag waving for Liberals and will not lift a finger for a Conservative."

Why the heck can't you and others understand that that isn't the issue?

We will certainly support the candidate if he meets your/our
"conservative standards".

The issue is IF Rudy is the nominee will he get ALL of our support.

Those that have the best interests of this country in mind will have to say YES.

We still have a long way to go.....Rudy is in the lead now and it's up to the others to prove themselves and take over.

I'm sure Duncan Hunter will be effective as Rudy's Secretary of Defense.

I don't know "zarf"...Hunter is a question mark.

He should certainly be considered...but is he capable?

I think the Rudy boosters should adopt Tom Waits' Step Right Up as their theme song.

Absolutely, no politician bats 100% conservative - least of all George Bush. As I said, my personal preference is Tancredo but it's only fair to see a candidate in the context of his entire record. One thing we can all agree on - Rudy has physical courage under fire (literally!) and political courage as well.

"Some people vote their conscience."

Some people are all feeling and no brain, and can't see the big picture, nor the consequences of their actions.
