Another Woman Claims Southwest Airlines Forced Her to Cover Up on Flight
FOX ^ | 09/13/07 | Unknown

A second young woman has come forward to claim that Southwest Airlines Co. employees made her cover up on a recent flight.

Setara Qassim told KNBC-TV in Los Angeles that a flight attendant confronted her during the trip from Tucson, Ariz., to Burbank, Calif., and asked if she had a sweater to go over her green halter-style dress.

Qassim, 21, said she was forced to wrap a blanket around herself for the rest of the flight. She complained that if Southwest wants passengers to dress a certain way, it should publish a dress code.

Last week, 23-year-old Kyla Ebbert said a Southwest employee pulled her aside as she was preparing to board a plane departing San Diego for Tucson in July and told her she was dressed too provocatively to fly on the plane.

Ebbert said she was humiliated and felt the stares of other passengers who had overheard the verbal dressing-down.

Airline spokesman Chris Mainz said the company had no record that Qassim ever complained.

Messages left with Qassim, who lives in southern California, were not immediately returned to The Associated Press.

Mainz said Dallas-based Southwest — which dressed its stewardesses in hot pants and called itself "the love airline" back in the 1970s — relies on employees to decide if a passenger's attire may offend other customers.

"We don't have a dress code. We rely on our employees to use common sense, good judgment and good taste," Mainz said. "It's so rare for us to have to address a customer's clothing issue."

American Airlines claims the right to refuse to carry passengers for a variety of reasons including being drunk, barefoot, having an offensive odor or being "clothed in a manner that would cause discomfort or offense to other passengers."

Frankly I find it distracting when a young woman boards a plane dressed like a French whore and smelling like one too. It is not the outfit per se. It is that these young women “parade” themselves about the airplane trying to be a distraction. Then when the old man takes in an eyeful, he’s treated like a leper.

But your ability to refuse service has largely been taken away.

I can't really give you flack over that, since if I was a restauranteur I may very well not wish to serve people in turbans or burkas. It's like barowners not being able to let their patrons smoke.

When it's posted, that seems different: "no shirt, no shoes, no service." And that should go for bras and panties, IMHO.

Funny, I remember an Arab couple who were given shave kits and asked to go ‘freshen up’ and later sued, but was that Southwest, too?

And honestly? I think a gentleman would agree that leaving something to the imagination is far sexier than ‘pulling a Brittney.’

if this SW employee turns out to be a male also, SW should send all gay male employees to sensitivity training.

As long as she isn't carrying a screaming baby it doesn't bother me... I try and snooze on planes as much as I can to help kill time.

It’s Islamification. Next, the veil will be required.

Except that the provocatively attired woman in question was named Setara Qassim. Now I don't know what Setara's religion is, but she sure has an Islamic name.

If that is what she was wearing, I think the airline personnel are getting far too paranoid. If they would spend more time actually taking care of passengers, they would not be trying to enforce dress codes. What exactly is supposed to be offensive about this dress?

“What exactly is supposed to be offensive about this dress?”

That the gay male flight attendant was jealous of her cleavage?

If they don’t stop trying to cover these pretty young women up in burka’s, I’m going to switch airlines.

Yes...you may have the RIGHT to wear whatever you want, but, it may NOT be the RIGHT thing to wear...these days, dressing like a whore seems to be the norm for many young women....
