For the money you cannot beat a Taurus Millennium Pro 145

http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?id=39&category=Pistol

Got one last weekend at the gun show for 375 nib. But also the Glock compact 45 or a new Taurus 1911 has all the bells and whistles too. Best thing to do is go look and find one that fits YOU

Get the XD series for this company. You will spend less for them than Glock. The Marines have now tested them against the Glock and have found them more reliable. I own two and heading for my third one.

There’s nothing wrong w/ 9mm if you use hollow point, defensive loads. Kel-Tec PF-9 is a great carry weapon.

For .45, I just bought a Glock-30 and love it. But it’s twice the bulk of the PF-9. There’s no way I could concealed carry that gun in the summer here in Texas.

I have this little beauty:

I love it! This one doesnt start to hurt until after I pass 100 rounds. Chain stores are going to carry it for around $500, I got mine from a local gun store for $435.

Don’t buy a over priced pellet pistol...Get a Firearm that WILL save your life! We have three revolvers to carry S&W 4” .357 Mag,Ruger Redawk 4” 44 mag & a Ruger Montado 45 colt..I carry my 44 with a Pancake holster made by Simply Rugged and NEVER feel out gunned..L.O.L The 45 Colt is a dream to fire & carry and my Wife had claimed it as her new defender. If you do buy a New firearm just spend the extra cash and get a good gun

I currently carry a Kimber Crimson Cary II 1911 but I also like the Walther P99 in .40 and am especially fond of the Steyer M9A .40. You really can’t go wrong with any of the top hammerless Pistols from Glock, Sig Steyr, Walther or H&K. The 1911s are never going to be as reliable without lots of babying so I hesitate to recommend em unles the person doesn’t have a problem with maintenance.
At the pricepoint you’re talking, You’ve got alot of choices. A Sig or a Glock is probably your best and most accessible bet. Stick with .40 or .45 but be advised that it’s getting hard to find .45 ACP.

Look for a Smith & Wesson Model 36 Chiefs Special 38. It doesn't leave empty cases at the scene of the shooting, and can stay loaded and ready to use for years, without taking the tension out of a spring like a semi-auto pistol will.
