I'm looking to buy a gun for protection and a riffle for hunting. I have handled guns but it has been a long time so I have become rather ignorant on what to have. So I'm asking the gun owners on FR to chime in and give advice on this and if possible some guide lines on what to pay for a good gun and riffle. Thanks
In my opinion best home defense weapon is a shotgun.

Not sure about riffles, but a good hunting rifle would be a Remington 700 in .30-06 or .308.

for home, pistol is best, imho. pros and cons between pistol and shotgun, but i think pistol is better.
Are the larger caliber ammo still available? I have been lead to believe that it is becoming very hard to get in a large quantities.

Depending upon your location....Gun Shows can give you multiple choices and advice.....Church goers tend to be Armed at home also...seek and ye shall find.

What type of hunting? For home defense a short overall length shotgun would be handy as would a low powered big bore handgun such as the .45 Colt, something like the old Colt New Service or a Smith & Wesson model 25.
Actually just about any handgun is better than nothing. I like autos but for quick simple use a revolver might be better.
Even a Ruger 10/22 Autoloading rifle would be fine. Keep it loaded with a high quality 30-50 round magazine and you could do a lot worse. It is short and handy and pretty powerful with those soft lead bullets putting out 150 ft. Poudns of energy.
They shoot hollow plastic bullets covered with little tiny holes.
Too bad you’d have to buy a registered gun.

Yeah. Inside the home you really do not want to be using a rifle. Also inside the home you do not want to use full metal jacket bullets.

Agree - it's almost impossible to miss and the shot doesn't kill a sleeping child three rooms down. Shoot a pistol and the shot goes right through layers of drywall - not so with a shotgun. Also, the intimidation factor - anyone looking down the barrel knows you're not going to miss...
