Hate crime laws useless in the American South (don't read right after eating)
Huliq ^ | April 8, 2012 | Anissa Ford

Another set of white men living in the American South have been arrested for murdering black people.

In Tulsa, after police followed through with an anonymous tip, two men accused of hunting, shooting and killing three black people and critically wounding two more were hunted down and captured early Sunday morning.

At issue, as the Tulsa shooting case moves forward, is an increasing and inexplicable tendency among certain men to target, stalk, and hunt black men. Hate crimes laws in the U.S., which have been on the books for a decade at least, apparently aren't enough to deter people motivated by the basest and most fatuous of human emotions: envy, bias, prejudice and hatred.

Hate crime charges carry mandatory jail sentences, whether the perpetrator of the hate crime murders someone or not. George Zimmerman, the shooter in the Trayvon Martin case, and his lawyers, are hosting a deliberate, strategic fight to absolve Zimmerman of a hate crimes charge, thus hoping to avoid a mandatory jail term.

The FBI, U.S. Marshals Service and two dozen Tulsa police officers were in a hunt of their own for the two men who drove around Tulsa Friday in a white pickup truck. Those men asked their victims for directions before they opened fire. The shootings were on Tulsa’s north side where residents say they’ve had trouble in the community, but never random killings.

Friday’s fatal shootings in Tulsa stopped, but 19-year-old Jake England and 32-year-old Alvin Watts were on the loose. They weren't arrested until 1:47 a.m. this morning (Sunday, April 8, 2012). A news conference this afternoon by Tulsa law enforcement should give more details on the case and the arrest.

Friday’s Tulsa shooting incident occurred two weeks after 19-year-old Deryl Dedmon, a white teen in Mississippi, submitted a guilty plea in a hate crime case. In that incident, Dedmon along with a few pals, repeatedly ran over and killed 49-year-old James Craig Anderson, a black man. Dedmon assaulted Anderson in a hotel parking lot with his Ford pickup truck. Dedmon’s murder was recorded by hotel security cameras.

Tulsa is considered Oklahoma’s “cultural capital.” It’s the second largest city in Oklahoma. Population 391,906. Many remember Tulsa for what history texts call the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot. As late as the early 1800s, Native Americans, the original settlers in the territory, called the Tulsa area home.

The Tulsa murders cast a shadow on the hope for race relations in the American South. If there is one light in the darkness of what will likely go on record as hate crimes in Tulsa, it’s that an anonymous tipster came forward to disclose the whereabouts and identities of Watts and England.

As long as attackers motivated by hate and bias succeed with their kills, the road and bridges to racial reconciliation in this country are strained.

Law enforcement in Tulsa had been on a search and surveillance mission with a helicopter since Saturday. Watts and England were arrested at 1:47 a.m. this morning (Sunday).

Watts and England, it appears, targeted black people all of whom were walking and all of whom were within a three mile radius of the other when Watts and England shot and killed or injured them. Police have indicated the shootings are random because the victims do not appear to have known each other.

Although the Tulsa’s police chief said the attacks are cowardly, the African American community is looking for assurances and safety. In less than 90 days, the murders of unsuspecting black people by armed men of other races have opened conversations on the hunting of black men- a racist practice considered sport in the past by hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.

Since when is Oklahoma a Southern state? And based on this column, the DC snipers would prove that all blacks & Muslims hate whites, right?

England is Cherokee. His father was shot and killed by a black man, a thief, ransacking the apartment of England’s sister.

The police suspect revenge is the motivation.

England is a self-identifying Cherokee Indian.

Note to ABCNNBCBS: he is not a "White Red Man."

Media are doing their best to bring you “The Police State”... coming to a country near you...and soon.

You are right about the media desire to bring on a Police State. Combine that with O’s desire for gun control and we have a dismal future unless there are changes in Washington. Things like the Tulsa shootings play right into their agenda.

Since when is Oklahoma a Southern state?

Oklahoma has been a Southern state since about the time Honolulu became an Asian city and the US acquired its 58th state.

In my mind the Democrats have been using race, among other things, to divide this Republic. My question is are they doing this out of ignorance and don’t believe it will elevate to the point of real violence, or is this part of a master plan to incite violence so our beloved leader will just have to declare martial law and suspend the November elections.

They know what they caused back in 1991 using the Rodney King incident to incite racial violence which exploded during the LA riots. They know what they are doing and they are doing it again. I hope that enough of the American people finally seen the evil cynicism of the msm and turn away from them leaving them with no viewers.

This article is just plain stupid. OK is populated by the finest people I have ever lived around. There are some places that are dangerous, but overall the most friendly honest people I have ever lived among.

I lived in Piedmont, OK for 7 years.

When Is Oklahoma a Southern State?

Well, it is kinda complicated. Only the Cherokee Nation is Southern. It happened this way. In 1861, the Cherokees were still pissed off at Andrew Jackson and the U.S. Govt. for that "Trail of Tears" affair. That and the fact that the some of the Cherokee that were left in Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolina's were in fact slaveholders. Anyhow, the Cherokee fought for the Confederacy during the nor-so-Civil War. That might explain calling Oklahoma part of the Old South. Naaaaa. I doubt if any of the media and the civil rights industry even know that little fact. Making Oklahoma a part of the Old South and a member of the Cherokee Nation into a white skinhead fits the template they need to spread the word of wide spread prejudice and hatred of the blacks.

Hate crimes are crimes against thought and beliefs and have no place in a free society.

I agree. Hate crime laws are pretty much useless in preventing crimes (whether it be north, south east or west). Just like a lot of other laws, they only change what the punishment might be for the crime.

Blacks are 39 times more likely to murder a white than vice-versa.

But white people deserve it.

“Hate crime” laws are totally worthless. Most aren’t used in situations where they should be, but are not. (PC considerations, ya know.) And they are misapplied when they are used.

It is time long overdue to scrap them all.
