Trayvon Martin and race: Humans can't make progress until we move past stereotypes and prejudice

Trayvon Martin did not deserve to die. Everyone has heard the story of the 17-year-old black kid who was walking home from a Florida gas station, when he was shot dead by a self-appointed neighborhood watchman. Zimmerman wasn’t arrested until recently, since he was protected by Florida’s "Stand Your Ground" law, which states that it’s all right to kill someone if they confront you. George Zimmerman claims that Martin attacked him.

I’m a white kid, so some may argue that the gravity of the situation is somewhat lost on me, but it’s not. I’m a firm believer in the fact that every person is considered a person, no matter what they look like, or where they’re from. I’ve lived in Syracuse for my entire life and thanks to the schools that I go to, I have lived with an unbelievable amount of diversity every single day.

There is no doubt in my mind that this was a racially motivated murder. If it had been a white girl, Zimmerman would’ve been in jail so fast -- although, he probably wouldn’t have shot in the first place. Even if Martin really did attack Zimmerman, the fact remains that Zimmerman followed the unarmed kid with a gun. If Martin had a gun, he would’ve been completely within his rights to kill Zimmerman, but, if he had, he probably would’ve been arrested and put in jail for years.

Racism like this needs to end. We need to move past these ideas of stereotypes and prejudice and coexist. Only then can we make true progression within the human race.

Well it is good to know that this 15 year old has no doubt in his mind and he pronounces George Zimmerman guilty.

The public school has no capacity to teach critical thinking.

In all fairness to this young kid, I read very similar diatribes on FR, by indignant white guilt-sufferers, when this story first started being pimped by the msm {and you know who you are}.

So lets see....human beings have held prejudices for ALL of our history. Yet, according to the author, we should have made no “progress”. Hmmm......

The human brain (or any brain) is basically a big statistical calculator. We learn rules from observation and use those rules to discriminate and make judgements. That’s just how people work. Anyone who denies this does not understand didly. In fact, the whole point of Liberalism is to put feelings above reality—much like a child does.

In the beginning, when this thing went national, most articles attacking Zimmerman were sophomoric. Now, with the evidence available to us, ALL of them are. Every. Single. One.

I guess if Winston Churchill's saying is true (anyone who's 20 and not a liberal has no heart, anyone who's 40 and not a conservative has no brain), then I was pretty heartless in high school.

Interesting remark -- Cole Thorna is a sophomore at Nottingham High School in Syracuse, and that hugh school is right in the lap of Syracuse U, the home of the Maxwell School Dept. of Political science, as well as a prominent School of Education. Syracuse no doubt has great influence on this high school and its administration (left-leaning?).

Thus it is not unlikely that Nottingham High, being close enough to city center to be the focus of intensive busing, has enough resources to educate some fools of the first water. Like this little sophomore, who presumptuously writes:

Trayvon Martin did not deserve to die.

If it becomes clear that Trayvon intended to permanently damage the brain case of someone by whom he felt a bit "dissed," it is also clear that he did deserve to die, at that moment and on that spot, without further excuse for reserving summary judgment.

Hope this gets through to Cole Thorna. Do we have any FReepers from Syracuse who might wish to answer Cole's blog, or perhaps drop him a line encouraging doing some research before offering the global population his keen teenaged insight?

I think it’s a clarion call for lazy submissive people to reclaim their past warrior culture. There isn’t a soul alive who can’t trace their history back to someone who stood a wall, pike in hand, or walked into a cave with torch and spear because his family needed the shelter more than the cave bear did.

I’ve been a martial arts instructor, and there’s basics a person could learn in a few weeks. All the hard work is between the ears. Have you ever seen a hypnotist have a subject under trance break boards, when they would break their hand if they tried it awake? We disarm ourselves with fear, even our minds have been altered by our culture to assume submissiveness. “Their” culture, though twisted otherwise, does not.

You see the results with your own eyes.

Other instructors start with how to block, how to fall, how to slip, dodge, evade...defense, defense, defense.

I always started with newbies by telling them “OK, I’m going to teach you how to mug people”...just to joggle their brain out of this victim mode. Some looked as fearful at this suggestion, that one might have thought I said I was about to mug them. It ends up the tragedy is people are willing to be victimized, and the will, not magic tricks, is the meat of the matter.
