Commentary: B37 Spells Bingo for George Zimmerman (Trial was "rigged" against Trayvon or somethin')
Black Entertainment Television's Fighting Words! ^ | July 16, 2013 | Keith Boykin

Defense attorneys knew a jury of five white women and one Hispanic woman would find it difficult to identify with the humanity of a Black teenage boy.

When I was a kid in Florida, I remember the old folks used to play Bingo. As far as I could tell, it was purely a game of luck. If they called your number, you simply moved your chip onto the appropriate space on the board.

But what if a player controlled the boards that were distributed or the numbers that were called. That would obviously raise a ruckus, of course, unless it was done in a way that made it seem fair.

That's the sinking feeling I got Monday night when I watched the televised CNN interview with Juror B37, the first juror from the George Zimmerman trial to go public. Watching the inconsistencies in her logic made me remember those Bingo games and how seemingly neutral systems could be constructed in a way to guarantee a particular outcome.

One day when I was young, I discovered my grandmother had rigged a church Bingo game so that her best friend's granddaughter could win a bicycle. Young and naive, I challenged her. "Oh, the white folks do it all the time," she blithely responded. I didn't believe her back then. Then I saw Juror B37.

By her own words Monday night, Juror B37 made the case to convict Zimmerman of manslaughter. After listening to all the evidence, half of the jury initially felt Zimmerman was guilty but the other jurors persuaded them to change their minds. Although B37 was one of the initial not guilty votes herself, her own statements to Anderson Cooper actually make the case for manslaughter.

"George Zimmerman is guilty of not using good judgment," she told Cooper....

By this boneheads logic, Zimmerman was guilty of escalating the situation because he exercised his RIGHT to carry a gun.

Could they even call the jurors to testify at a theoretical federal civil rights trial or civil suit? They didn’t witness the shooting any more than I did.

Defense attorneys knew a jury of five white women and one Hispanic woman would find it difficult to identify with the humanity of a Black teenage boy.

The defense attorneys knew that they wanted to avoid black jurors because black people almost always side with their race. You can just look at the pre-trial polls where whites and Hispanics were split as to whether Zimmerman was guilty, but 90+% of blacks were convinced Zimmerman is guilty. Blackness uber alles.

Given that whites and Hispanics had more varied views on the case than blacks wouldn't it be more appropriate to ask -- Why do black people find it so difficult to identify with the humanity of a Hispanic man? After all, that Hispanic man's life could have been extinguished that night, and for all intents and purposes his life could have been extinguished by the verdict. Yet little to no care by the black community.

In the end, it's not the defense attorneys job to fulfill some sort of jury diversity quota or to appease agitators. Their job is to defend George Zimmerman and that entailed using voir dire to keep people who would be biased against their client off the jury.

If this author wants to cry about no black people on the jury, then the only people to blame are the prosecutors. Not the defense attorneys, not the legal system, not America, but the prosecutors who failed to get people on the jury that would most instinctively side with Trayvon Martin.

The defense and prosecution settled on these jurors through voir dire.

Each attorney can dismiss prospective jurors for any and no reason until there are 6-12 jurors left.

You can’t hang the makeup of a jury on the defense. The prosecution played an equal role in the selection process

Yeah, that's why juror B37 was crying on national TV.

I'm trying to think of a word like @$$hat. Except stronger.

Maybe it'll come to me.

These people are despicable.

Trayvon Martin was a teenager from Miami . . ...
with two felonious acts on his Miami record, expelled from school, sent to Sanford to live w. father’s girl friend; purchased ingredients for concocting a mind-bending drug, of which Skittles is said to be an “enhancing” additive; was reported to be 6’-2” tall and weighing abt. 170 pounds (a teen-aged child, according to Bob Beckel, Fox News), and fully capable of pounding Zimmmerman’s face to a bloody pulp and his brain to a puddle of mush if not deterred by explosive force.

Can someone remind this idiot that the prosecution CHOSE this jury..they wanted an all women jury to look at those pictures of Trayvon and go “Awwwwwwwwwwwww poor baby” and convict Zimmerman..didnt work out that way did it..the jury saw through that BS and rendered a just verdict.

Actually, each side plays by the same general rules in picking a jury, with each permitted to challenge and reject prospective jurors on certain grounds. Any juror that gets through the selection process and is seated has to be acceptable to both prosecution and defense.

So, contrary to this airhead who wrote the posted piece, this was not a "rigged" jury chosen deliberately to help the defense, but rather one that both sides were OK with at the time it was seated.

B37, rather than being scalded as in this piece, deserves a lot of credit for her courage in holding to her NOT GUILTY position during the deliberations, despite pressures from fellow jurors and outside leftist agitators to convict Zimmerman and give him a lengthy prison sentence.

If somehow Zimmerman got stuck with an all-black jury, he wouldn’t have had a snowball’s chance in hell of being found innocent. You can take that one to the bank.

If the jury was racially split (3 white women and 3 black women), you would’ve either had a hung jury/mistrial, or the three black women strongarming the white women into going along with a manslaughter charge.

"I want to know whom BET will blame when all of this flame fanning ends up killing someone."

It's already happening. One here, one there...so far. And so far, that isn't enough so it will get worse. Who will they blame? Do you really need to ask?

This is a Black Rage Ping List, (by request,) to cover the aftermath of the GZ trial and archive the incidents. Let me know. And please add "blackrage" to the keywords. Thank you.
