The Indian Navy's extensive experience in operating Russian Kilo-class submarines, which dates back to the mid-1980s, will be invaluable to Vietnam as its navy learns how to handle their new underwater vessels, according to the

Strange Bedfellows.

Both are China's neighbors, who have fought China before.

The Russians have fought the Chinese too. What country that borders China has not fought the Chinese?

Both Russia and Japan have fought China. And what a coincidence, they are talking too.

Russia, Japan upgrade defence ties as part of 2+2 mechanism

A few subs, do not a navy make. In a war with China it will be endurance and massive land armies that will win the day. Advise to Vietnam—start to learn to speak Chinese.

Việt Nam will get its military upgrade help where it can. China is the big bad bear in the neighborhood and Việt Nam feels perpetually threatened from that quarter. India is not terribly relaxed vis a vis the Chinese either, nor is Russia. China has all the ingredients for an expansionist and powerful state. It has what it feels as historical claims to just about all of East Asia, having been The Empire for the last 3000 years or so, with all the states around it periodically provinces of that Empire or tributary to it.

China also has a tremendous excess of young male citizens which are always trouble to their country. It needs to use them up in foreign wars. Việt Nam finally shook off the Chinese a thousand years ago and has fought them a number of times since.
