Debate on Irish boycott of US St. Patrick's Day trip debate gathers pace

Unlike any other small country, Ireland’s Taoiseach gets unparalleled facetime with the leader of the free world in the White House to mark St. Patrick’s Day.

In a tradition since 1952, it is usually smiles, camaraderie and photos as a bowl of Shamrock is handed over to the US President.

It is the high water mark in US-Irish relations and part of a week of diplomacy, dinners and drink receptions.

For the Taoiseach, meeting the US President is a golden political opportunity. But this year it is different.

The conflict in Gaza has created an uncomfortable pall over what is usually the highlight of the year for the Taoiseach.

As the US is seen as an ally of Israel, few were surprised that some figures on the far left in Ireland criticized Leo Varadkar for planning to go to Washington next month.

But the news that SDLP leader Colum Eastwood has pulled out because of Gaza also puts pressure on Sinn Féin politicians who are regular attendees at the White House. […]

Asked about his trip to the White House, which he pointed out has yet to be confirmed, Mr. Varadkar said he hoped there would be a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas before 17 March. …

Isn’t he a Hindu homosexual or something? What does he -really- care about Ireland?

Just another move to destroy any tradition that gives not only America, but apparently any country , national and social identity.

Big Brother is trying to erase our history and replace it so some day nobody will ever know what they’ve (we’ve) lost.

I doubt he cares about Israel either.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has NOTHING to do with Ireland and the US nor their relations.

This is just an excuse.

> What does he -really- care about Ireland? <

He doesn’t. Back in November of 2023 a Muslim stabbed three young Irish kids and their caregiver in Dublin. The wounds were severe. Native Irish citizens went nuts, as would be expected.

The Irish government cracked down hard, not on the Muslims but on the protesters.

The Irish can be goofy sometimes. They see the Israelis as the occupiers similar to the English. They see people living in Gaza trying to fight the occupation just like the Irish did when the English ruled Ireland.

He cares nothing for Ireland. He only cares about implementing the EU agenda there.

Same goes for his deputy prime minister, Micheál Martin, who said this back in 2021:
Let there be no doubt about where Ireland stands: We want nothing to do with a backward-looking idea of sovereignty. We are fully committed to the principles of the European Union.
Both Varadkar and Martin represent the two major political parties there.

… We remain absolutely committed to the ideals of the European Union.
Correcting Martin’s words there.

And JFTR, the EU’s ideals come straight out of the 1936 USSR constitution, via the UN Charter (thanks to Alger Hiss).

I think that goes for about anyone in any political position these days.

It seems to be a prerequisite for becoming one of the favored elites.

Irish spend 700 years rejecting rule by the foreign Brits only to spend the recent generation fellating every mainland Europe bureaucrat and Hindu and Muslim supremacist that invades them. Whiskey causes insanity.

Ireland, the land of my father’s family and our connection as part of the same family as Michael Collins, is an embarrassing dung heap.
They fought the British for 800 years to be able to practice their Catholic faith - won it - then threw it away in 100 years to suck up to the Godless worms in Europe.
Go ahead Ireland, keep it up and look forward to another 800 years but remember you did it to yourselves.

Elizabeth I wasn’t around until the 16th century and the Penal Laws came around in the 17th, so that would put that estimation about 400 years off at most. Also, Henry II was the one that made Ireland fully Catholic in the 12th century by means of the Norman invasion; he got the title “King of Ireland” with the blessing of two popes, after King Dermot Mac Murrough of Leinster province swore fealty to him in exchange for help to reverse his being deposed by the Irish high king Rory O’Connor.

Also, the Irish Republican Brotherhood was certainly not fully Catholic; many communists were among their ranks, e.g. James Connolly, who would not be fighting for the freedom to practice the Catholic faith but to impose godless atheism on Ireland in 1916.
